COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"System of a Stout" is an imperial stout infused with all the traditional ingredients of a savory cup of Armenian coffee: cardamom, molasses, coffee (of course), and brandy. In the kettle, the beer is lightly dosed with green cardamom for exotic spice notes. Molasses adds a richness that seamlessly blends in. The finished beer was then aged for several days masterfully roasted coffee from Portola Coffee Lab in Costa Mesa. The beer was then aged for several weeks on Armenian brandy-soaked oak chips for yet another dimension of flavors and aromas. Take your time and enjoy this endlessly complex and nuanced beer.

Poured from a 22 oz, 2017 vintage bottle. Aroma is coffee forward with some lighter cardamom notes. Light chocolate and roast notes with hints of molasses. Light dark fruit and raisin notes with hints of alcohol spice. Pours black with a medium sized, thick, creamy, mocha head that exhibits decent retention as it steadily recedes to a small film that lingers. No lacing and moderately long legs. Flavor is somewhat/moderately sweet with moderate bitter chocolate notes. Moderate coffee with light cardamom and roast. Medium to medium high bitterness. Light dark fruit and raisin notes with some light alcohol spice. Medium light oak notes. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low to medium low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a decent stout. i am not a huge fan of cardamom, but the coffee notes are nice. Its not too sweet, but it does become sweeter as it warms. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, but its silky so that helps.

(Rating #7917)

Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours dark brown with a dark tan head. Aroma is mostly coffee over dark, dark treacle. Full bodied. Flavor is coffee, chocolate, treacle, and maybe a touch of wood. Brandy? Could be. Heat is not an issue. This is challenging to parse, but very flavorful.

Bottle from Cap Tap. Pours dark brown with a thick tan head and a treacle and coffee aroma. There is a near full-bodied dark molasses flavor with a lot of roasted coffee and a hint of brandy. Easy to drink for such a big beer.

My Bottom Line:
Roasted coffee beans meet whipped cream, chocolate and alcohol warmth in this most luxurious Imperial Stout.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy head of foam decorates the brown-edged black.
-Coffee seems to develop a vegetal touch, but in the nose only.
-The mouthfeel on this one is to die for (if you are in the mood for dessert, of course).
-The finish is laced in pepper heat.

Bottle.

Very dark brown color, frothy light beige head. Cinnamon, coffee, spices, some nuttiness, hints of vanilla, and brown sugar. A bit bittersweet but grows drier and more bitter. Gently carbed, creamy, and almost full bodied with a roasty coffee finish.

22oz bottle pours a black color with a bit of beige head. Lots of spice overpower a little. Coffee bitterness.

Black pour with a tan head. Aroma is coffee, roast, chocolate, lightly spiced, some dried fruit. Medium to full body, not a typical Imperial Stout (chocolate coffee blah blah) and pretty well made, just isn’t great.

Dark brown, thin head. Looks nice. Deep sweet chocolate and coffee. Very sweet, lots of coffee, chocolate. Nice dessert stout though really a lot of sweetness.
