COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Tovarish is a bold Russian imperial stout brewed with a base of British Maris Otter barley and heaping amounts of roasted barley and specialty malts. Its finished with a touch of blackstrap molasses along with espresso brewed with the finest Arabian Mocha-Java coffee from our friends at Peets. Tovarish is remarkably rich and complex. Savor the layers of roast and dark fruits with every sip.

Bottled 12/12/16. Standard version; red wax (Portola Coffee Lab). Aromas dominated by espresso roast followed by smoky coffee beans & malts. Flavors start with a hit of intense dark roast coffeesmoky & slightly acidic. Middle features some caramel & molasses. Finishes with an ashy, burnt malt note and some lingering caramel sweetness. The coffee & malts create an extra dark chocolate note once it warms up. A lot of booze as it nears room temp. Thick, full texture and little carbonation. Dry as hell at the end as youd expect from an espresso RIS. At $16 a bomber, its a bit overpriced but still a very good example of the style. I also think Portola fucking sucks, so blame me for the slightly lower score.

UPDATED: JAN 22, 2017 (En ft BLAH): Une chair de poivron piquante, de lespresso finement aiguis, du chocolat noir et un aspect fruit bien calibr. Trs bon avec une base riche mais jamais encombrante. *Encore plus chocolat noir et mieux peaufin en bouteille.

On tap at Pangaea. Pours dark brown with a thick tan head and a treacle and coffee aroma. There is a full-bodied dark molasses flavor with lots of coffee and a dry finish.

From the tap it pours an almost black like color with a small head. The nose has coffee up front with roasted malts and some chocolate. Taste has more coffee but not overpowering then some bittersweet cocoa, roasted malts and some caramel. Long smooth finish.

650 ml bottle from trade with RobertDale. Thanks Bob!! Black color with beige brown head. Roasted malty aroma, lots of coffee, espresso, cocoa, chocolate, licorice, caramel, some fruits. Sweet and bitter taste like aroma. Full silky almost creamy body with soft carbonation.

Black with a medium sized tan head. Aroma is lots of creamy espresso, some vanilla notes, toffee, prunes, licorice, light roasted malts with notes of dark chocolate and milk chocolate. Taste is medium sweet with a soft roasted bitterness. Finish is light smooth and bitter roasted coffee, sweet malty toffee notes with some vanilla and molasses, hints of dried fruits. Bottle at a Dangerous Bottleshare. Pours a pitch black with a small, tan head. Aroma has hard roasted malts, pretty hard roasted coffee, cocoa powder, bell pepper, licorice. Taste is medium sweet, smooth, roasty, lots of chocolate. Fruity coffee, spicy, Bitter finish. Full, oily body and medium low carbonation. Super nice!

The beer is black and heavy. It has a smallish light brown head. The liquid shows off some nice viscosity on the walls of the glass. The aroma has deep, rich coffee flavors on top of a roasty, dark chocolate fudge base. Coffee beans, caramel, cocoa powder, light vanilla. Mild hit of booze. Some peppery spice in the mix. The taste has a wonderful balancing strength of coffee and roast bitterness to the caramel and chocolate sweetness. The coffee flavor is full with a touch of brightness and fruit. Big fudge base. Lingering roast and vanilla finish. Big, chewy mouthfeel. Its not quite full on brownie batter, but its close. This is a wonderful coffee imperial stout.
