Big Bear is a big, black, stout you can really sink your teeth into. The bold, roasty, caramel malt flavor is balanced by Centennial and Cascade hops.

22 oz bottle into a tulip. From notes. A: Pours a dark ruby color that actually reveals some suspended sediment when held up to the light. Otherwise, its nicely opaque. The head is a two finger khaki shade. It fades slowly but surely, however it leaves little lacing on the glass. S: I note some licorice, dark fruits, touches of both smoke and citrusy hops, along with a hint of roast. A rather nondescript aroma for an imperial stout; its more befitting of a good single stout. T: This one seems to be dark fruit and licorice forward. I notice some caramel in the midtaste, and pleasantly balanced citrusy hops on the back end. The hops also provide some herbal and peach qualities. It seems to be mellow and balanced to a fault - however, this would make a great everyday stout due to its easygoing nature. M: Its light, clean, and dry. If the bottle didnt say 8.1%, Id wonder if it was really 5% or so; the alcohol is concealed superbly given its lightness. It doesnt offer much in the way of richness, however. O: I was unsure how to grade this one. As an imperial stout, its rather meh - but as a regular stout, its damn good. For better or for worse, this drinks like a 5% single stout...except that its really 8.1%. Since Bear Republic doesnt call it an imperial stout, Im grading it as a single. Ergo, Im willing to overlook some of its flaws and appreciate it as a decently priced (for a bomber) everyday drinker.

A delicious stout designed to get through the winter months. Black in color with a light brown head of foam. Rich caramel and nutty cocoa with some subtle roast at the finish.

330ml bottle. Thanks, Sten. Pours black colour. Thin beige head. Bit nutty, chocolaty, slightly bready and caramelly aroma. Slightly chocolaty, caramelly taste. Bit malty, nice chocolaty aftertaste. Has been bit overcarbonated. Rather medium bodied, descent stout.

12-ounce bottle pours black with dark tan head that settles quickly, leaving behind a small amount of soapy lacing. Subdued aroma with faint caramel and coffee. Flavor is toffee, caramel, espresso, figs, dates, a smokiness from roasted malts, with a lingering bittersweetness; the flavors seriously ramp up as the beer warms. Mouthfeel is moderate, slick -- someplace between a stout and an imperial stout.

Bottle from saveur-biere.com. Pours pitch black. Very viscous. Nose is basement aroma, toffee, touch boozy, dark fruits. Oily mouthfeel. Nice traditional imperial stout. But I like the coffee/vanilla/etc. Stouts more.

Top!

Bottle from Hopt. Aroma is roasted malt, cocoa, dark chocolate, fudge brownie, caramel, with a slight touch of liquorice. Flavour is medium sweet and mildly bitter. Body is medium to full with a fairly creamy feel and texture .Not the worlds biggest Imperial Stout, but just so damn smooth and drinkable.
