On tap @ Encinitas Ale House. Black pour with a dense tan head. Typical aromas of the style. Roasted malt, a bit of cocoa powder and ash, some earthy hops. Perhaps a hint of smoke. Certainly coffee. Flavor is bitter coffee, earthy hops, and roasted malt. Light cocoa powder and smoke. Dry finish, somewhat thin on the palate. Average. Beerenberger (1605) - Fischer, Texas, USA - MAY 22, 2014
On tap at the brewery. Aroma of sweet roasted malts and chocolate. A solid black pour with a lasting tan head (thanks to the nitro) and abundant lacing. The taste is rich and rewarding. Dark roasted malts, chocolate and coffee. Full smooth mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Overall, very smooth and robust. Nickls (2527) - Alexandria, Virginia, USA - MAY 28, 2010
(Old BA rate - nitro-tap at Rattle N Hum 5/15/09)
Deep mahogany, near black color. Light tan cap of a head that looked like it had been painted on top of the brew. Great retention and curtains of lacing throughout the sample. Pretty muted aromas; some dry roasted maltiness and perhaps a whiff of some dark fruits....not much going on here. Roasted maltiness, but not overly so. Hint of graininess, and a very dry finish. Smooth, creamy, but at the same time quite a light body. Satisfying in all the right ways, and very much expected for what I would want in the style. Overall, more than worth a look and was a nice break from the extreme.

On nitro at Rattle n Hum. Whipped up black coffee and cream appearance.Lots of lace. No overt fragerance. Creamy mouthfeel as expected, and notes of chocolate. Decent stout, not too dry but not too complex. nickd717 (4648) - San Francisco, California, USA - MAY 12, 2009
Tap at Bear Republic. Guinness-like black appearance with a nitro head. Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. Flavor is roasted malt, toast, coffee, and chocolate. Fuller on the palate than something like Guinness. Dry finish. bb (9241) - Alamo, California, USA - MAY 8, 2009
Draft. Blackish beer with a light tan head. Nice malty, roasty, chocolate aroma. Chocolate and sweet malt flavor with light roast. Medium bodied. Chocolate and sweet malt lingers with a bit of light lactose sweetness. tokyogoat (1503) - San Diego, California, USA - MAY 7, 2009
I found this to be reminiscent of the Samuel Smith’s RIS. Thin, simple flavors, little head, bubbly, and very average overall. Alcohol has no punch, its pretty damn hidden, not too much mouth feel, but nothing offensive.

Tap at the Blind Tiger. Man I just love this style, what can I say. A good dry stout on nitro simply can’t be beat (and no, I’m not talking about that bullshit Guinness). This beer has a subtle but delicious homemade cookie and chocolate aroma, smooth and silky, with lots of cacao nibs. Smooth, perfect body, dry and creamy, lightly chalky, more fresh cookie. Excellent.
