Ernest (7695) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JUN 29, 2013
Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate, roasted grain), moderately hoppy (resin, grapefruit). Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery/creamy texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. A pretty ordinary and uninspiring example, but ok. Very simple aroma with just the basics for the style. Decent enough balance, but a bit sour. Meh.

[Bottle (660ml)] Pours a very dark amber-brown with an average size long-lasting frothy beige head. Some minimal lacing on the glass. Nice aroma is malty, chocolaty and hoppy first, followed by dark fruit and a hint of spices. Interesting flavour, must be the hops they chose: malty -- sweet and roasty -- and chocolaty but also slightly spicy from the hops, along with some fruit, coffee, a bit of alcohol and a moderate bitter finish. Medium bodied. Not great, but a pretty good, interesting version of the style.

teorn88 (7682) - Rimini, ITALY - AUG 19, 2013
22oz bottle. Pours clear dark ruby black with a medium creamy brown head that dissipates with nice lacing. Aroma is hoppy - grapefruit, touch of pine and some underlying coffee. Flavor is definitely IPA - citrus hoppy with underlying roasted malts, perhaps molasses. Lightly sweet and medium bitter. Medium body, slightly oily mouthfeel. Quite nice.

Appearance: Black with a big beige head
Aroma: Roasted malts and grapefruit
Taste: Toasted malts, grapefruit and pine
Nice. Lots of roast in the aroma, more of a IPA in the taste.

Idiosynkrasie (7516) - Bielefeld, GERMANY - SEP 30, 2013
650ml bottle. Pitch black colour with average, creamy, fairly lasting, moerately lacing, beige head. Herbal hoppy aroma has a touch of pine peppermint, salmiac. Taste is earthy, herbal, hints of coniferes, Bärwurz, Kräuterschnaps, minimally roasty dark malty; smooth, soft, silky, mouth-filling palate, long lasting finish.

Bomber from Hayduke. We had this together via facebook chat. A big tan head that has large bubbles that does not seem to fall. The beer is almost black with some red highlights. Very stout looking. Some very nice fruit in the aroma along with earth. I wish it were a little bigger. All kinds of hops are tasted. Complex fruit. Pineapple, with citrus. Some spiciness. A hint of chocolate and roasted notes. This beer is beautifully balanced and is a delight to drink. Cocoa comes in late as does some lactic. The feel is nice and smooth and has some richness to it. This is akin to a stout IPA. Good!

650ml bottle from Ales by Mail

Pours pitch black with a bubbly white head. Aroma of roasty malts, grassy hops, juicy fruitness, licorice and citrus. Taste is smooth, roasty and hoppy with notes of grass, licorice, citrus. Finish is dry, bitter, roasty and fruity with loads of licorice. Quite roasty black IPA, almost feels like an hoppy IS instead. Still very tasty and balanced, though.

22 oz. bottle. Not date code anywhere. Black color without much head to speak of. Floral hops and light cocoa. The flavor is kind of muddled. Yes the chocolate, ash, floral and pine hops are there but... It’s seems to fall short in boldness after the black IPA I sampled right before it. It just doesn’t pack a punch like most of others in the style, especially a few I just sampled. I really enjoy the style but this will not be a repeat buy.

On draught with Simon and Keith, . Pours black with beige head, good lacing. Notes of roasty malt, belgian malt, bitter hops, anise. Just ok.

22oz bottle: Pours a mostly opaque black with a stringy-lacing off-white head. Has a lightly sweet dark malty nose with lots of fresh resiny hops. Starts with pretty good fullness and clean dark malty sweetness with good piny hop bitterness and flavor before a drier bittersweet finish. True to style and enjoyable.
