Appearance: Pours near black with a beige frothy cap of head.skmikeg (1826) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 17, 2013
Aroma: Light roasted dark malt and a bit of citrusy dry hops.
Taste: Candied orange followed by piny hop bitterness. A little bit of roast on the back end. Finishes with medium duration.
Mouthfeel: Unusalky silky. Black patent malt or oats maybe? Active, almost creamy carbonation.
Overall: Typically, my benchmark for Black IPAs is Stone SSR or Deschutes Hop in The Dark. This beer is nothing like either, but more importantly it’s better than the other 97% of the Black IPAs on the market. Great flavor profile with minimal roast, and a remarkable mouthfeel. Could be more dank in the nose, but still a great balanced hoppy black ale.
Pours almost pitch black with some brown hues on the edges, with a two finger tan head which fades to nice lacing. Aroma is of cirus, pine, sweet malts, coco, and some coffee. Taste citrus, pine up front, with nice coco, coffee, and roasted malts in the back end. Has a medium full body with a creamy mouth and a slighty dry, moderately bitter, roasty finish. Overall, a tasty, pretty drinkable black IPA. Ibrew2or3 (8814) - Tempe, Arizona, USA - JUN 6, 2013
22oz bomber. As soon as the top was cracked I could smell yummy hops. It pours nice and dark with a full dark tan head of foam. The aroma offers up pine hops and some citrus hops as well as lighter notes of dark roasted malts and dark chocolate. The taste is right there! Yum. I get a pleasing fairly rich grapefruit like citrus hop flavor and bitterness that rolls into a mix of chocolate malts, dark roasted malts and then just the right amount of burnt malts. It only grows in citrus hop bitterness to midway as resiny pine hops join in and then into the finish the hops sweeten up just a tad to add little bit fuller mouth feel. Darn tasty stuff from one of my favorite breweries. JPDurden24 (1675) - Chandler, Arizona, USA - JUN 17, 2013
Dark black pour, light tan head. Roasty and citrus & resiny bitterness on the nose, taste is roast and chocolate forward with a nice hop balance with some pine in the finish. Nice black IPA. iggynelix (168) - Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 1, 2013
Not usually an ipa drinker, but this is a deliciously caramelled black ipa. Slightly hoppy.

Bottle. Pours nearly black with creme colored head that dissipates. Very mild carbonation. Bitter chocolate flavors up front with mellow hop flavors on the end. Nice black ipa.

From a bomber, pours jet black with a small white head, aroma of roasty chocolate malts with a nice piney hop presence, with some citrus tang coming through. Carbonation average. Finish is well balanced, bitter but crisp, very moreish. Great beer. glennmastrange (2924) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - SEP 17, 2013
Bottle. Moderate to heavy bread, cereal and toasted for the malt, light to moderate pine for the hops, and dough for the yeast, with a hint of charcoal in the background. Head is small, light brown, with good lacing and good legs, and is mostly diminishing. Color is very dark brown. Flavor starts lightly sweet and acidic, then the long finish is lightly sweet and acidic, and moderately bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, oily with a carbonation between soft and lively. Although a little stronger in malt than hops, this Black IPA is otherwise perfect. superspak (6015) - Waterford, Michigan, USA - SEP 19, 2013
22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 4/30/2013. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, orange zest, lemon zest, tangerine, dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, light char, toast, floral, light pine, and floral/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of hop and roasted malt notes; with good strength. Taste of grapefruit, orange zest, lemon zest, dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, light char, toast, floral, light pine, and floral/roasted earthiness. Fair amount of roasted/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, orange zest, cocoa, roasted malt, light char, floral, light pine, and floral/roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance and complexity of hop and roasted malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy, sticky, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent black IPA! All around great balance and complexity of hop and roasted malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering. want1DIPA (227) - - SEP 20, 2013
A bottle pour a few weeks back. Black IPA’s are my favorite all around brewing style. This one held its own and was a true delight. I was pleasantly surprised to find some hints of black licorice in there. Well done.
