4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: SEP 25, 2008 22oz bomber, no date. Pours a clear brown with an ample pillowy beige head. Big fat grapefruit and pine hops start out the aroma with some great sugary caramel and toffee malts. Pretty well balanced, bitterness showing up and then back to some malt sweetness. Light bitterness in the end. medium bodied. Not terribly complex, but very good. Side note :I’ve had a few rye beers so far, and I’ve yet to pick out the rye flavor/aroma in any, so I may be leaving out a dimension to these beers. 9-5-8-3-17--4.2. My lazy update two years later is as follows (got this bottle @ Bottle Barn). Aroma and flavor both have a slightly earthy element not stated in the previous rating, as well as some spicy sweet rye. Alcohol is completely masked, with bitterness peaking around a 5-6. I won’t change the rating, though I don’t think I’m quite as excited about it as I was two years ago. It’s still pretty damn good, and I still like it better than Red’s Rye.
22 ounce bottle. Deep amber orange color. Large rocky beige head with clinging lace. Sweet toasted malt nose. Bittersweet toasted malt flavor has earthy, spicy notes. Notes of rye grain, brown sugar and peppery hops. Lots of piney hops in finish. Very flavorful with warming alcohol notes as well. Well done. kathouse (1925) - LAS VEGAS, Nevada, USA - JUL 19, 2017
Dark amber color with a thick foam. Grainy aroma with caramel and rye. The malts are pretty big with rye spice taking over. Bitterness is there too along with some alcohol bite. PugUglyBrewer (742) - - APR 10, 2017
Dark amber color with an off white head of fluffy foam. Dominant notes of caramel grain, spicy rye, some dark fruitllb. Zymurgeist2 (2317) - Redwood City, California, USA - MAR 18, 2017
From bomber to pint glass. I haven’t had this for a few years. I seem to recall it being more robust in the past. Caramel, pine needles and slight perfume aroma. Pours a clear, pure copper with off-white head that lingers well and leaves slight caking down the glass. Flavor is overt spice and faint citrus. Finishes is moderately strong bitterness. Some goldenrod in the end of the flavor as it warmed. Bumping it up a little based on my views from days gone by. Hope to make it back to the brewery and try it fresh again there as I remember it well from Healdsburg. Ronritter (836) - Blaine, Minnesota, USA - MAR 12, 2017

One of my favorite beers!! Pours a dark Amber color. Aroma is filled with pine and grass notes. Taste starts with spicy flavors of the rye malt with a finish of pine and hops. The hops and rye malt compliment each other perfectly. A great classic!! gunnar (9324) - Sandnes, NORWAY - JAN 6, 2017
On tap at Vastarannan Kiiski, Helsinki. Pours almost clear deep golden with a small white head. Aroma of marmelade, citrussy deep hops. Moderate sweet taste initially , powerful yet balanced hoppy attack at the Finnish.... john44 (3189) - SW London, Greater London, ENGLAND - JAN 3, 2017
Bottle. Bought Aug 2012; BBE undated; Drank Dec 2012 - BCA; lots of floaties. Reddish Brown in colour. Hoppy; piney and floral hops. Fruity, citrus fruity; grapefruit and orange. Malty; toasty malts; caramel, rye malt. Nice hop/fruit/malt/spicy balance. Hops relatively mellowed; probably because bottle not fresh. Bittersweet citrus hoppy malty throughout; becoming earthy and spicy (the rye?). Increasingly bitter finish. Enjoyed this. Nice Rye DIPA! (2012-12-09)
