Draught at brewpub. Chocolate malt aroma that isn’t that strong. Dark reddish brown with a slightly off-white head. Head is light in color for a beer this dark. Nice lace. Commercial description indicates that the recipe is loosely based on Negra Modelo. I can see that, although Oso Negro is somewhat sweeter with a more discernible hop presence. This is clearly better than Negra Modelo but it probably wouldn’t go as well with Mexican food. Somewhat thin in the finish but still an excellent brew. I’m guessing this is a different beer than their "El Oso" which also has a strain of yeast from the Modelo brewery. illidurit (2347) - San Francisco, California, USA - JUL 13, 2009
RBSG09 on tap at the brewpub. Pours a dark clear brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma is cocoa with some roasted coffee and a hint of caramel. Lots of chocolate malt balls in the flavor along with caramel that melts into a roasty finish with moderate bitterness. Better than expected.

Sampled during RBSG 7/11/2009 on tap at the brewery. This dark lager pours a dark reddish color from the tap. Small sized white foamy head. The aroma is roasted malt and sweet. Medium bodied dark lager. The malts are roasty and sweet. The hops are earthy. Nice balance. Good carbonation. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet. Pours, you guessed it, ruby-tan! didn’t note the aroma. Tastes of dark rye, quite crisp. Coffee and caramel in the finish. Very light and easy to drink, and I was pleasantly surprised that Bear Republic could actually make a beer this light bodied. IrishBoy (4224) - Bakersfield, California, USA - JUL 17, 2009
Draft at the pub RBSG Bus Tour! Nose of light coffee and yeast. Clear dark brown with a medium tan head. Flavor had caramel and a hint of molasses.

"BR’s dark mexican lager is another solid effort. usually an unimpressive style, this one was smooth and sweet. caramel in the nose and flavor, with just enough hops to provide a delicate balance. a nice brown ale."

Draught at the brewpub during RBSG09. Dark brown with a creamy, off-white head. smooth chocolatey, malty aroma. Sweet, dusty, powdery chocolate flavor with almost no hops. Light bodied and a little sticky. This was ok, although a little to sweet, be it for lack of hops or under-attenuation. yespr (46719) - Copenhagen O, DENMARK - JUL 25, 2009
From tap at the brewpub. Pours dark brown with a small and light tan head. Aroma is roasted malty and slight breadish. Mild bitter and fruity flavoured with a light breadish roasted note. Ends mild bitter and slight fruity. GeneralGao (3614) - Iowa City, Iowa, USA - AUG 26, 2007
Draft at the brewpub. Poured a dark brown-orange color. Aroma was mostly malty chocolate. Sweet on the tongue with chocolate and toasted bread notes. No discernable hop flavor, aroma, or bitterness. A bit watery maybe. Papsoe (25060) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - AUG 10, 2009
On tap. Clear orangey brown with a dense off-white head. Roasted malt aroma. Medium body, roasted malt and some dry coffee notes. Dry malt bitterness in the finish. 110709
