My 300th rating! Pours golden orange with slight haze and a small head. The aroma is intense. Hops! Citrus, floral, fruits, some pine and a little sweetness. Flavor is bitter citrus and floral hops. Pine and some malt in the background. The fresh lemon and orange are strong on the tongue. Finishes bitter and a little dry. Smooth, medium body. Excellent. I need one of these and a porch on a warm summer evening and I’m all set.

Racer 5 is a cloudy orange ale with many small particles. The head is a fluffy, lumpy white one. The aroma is very hoppy-- almost soapy. Fruity sweetness and citrus peel dominate. It is medium-light on the tounge and quite smooth. It has a very fresh hop flavor. the balance is well done between the hop aroma and hop flavor, as well as between the bitterness and the body. The ugli fruit flavor lingers lightly for quite a while. I have punished many a pitcher of this at Zeitgeist in SF. Classic.

Pours a cleafr ambe with a white head. Floral aroma with hints of fruit and hops. Taste is powerful with plenty of hops and grapefruit. Finish is very nice and clean.

After a moving company completely destroyed 40% of my meager belongings this afternoon, I dare say I could use a beer! Appearance: Pours a light amber-copper color with a massive khaki-colored head and abundant lacing. Smell: Rich, intensified floral-citrus aroma with a veritable basket of juicy fruits (grapefruit, oranges, pineapple). Lighter traces of pine and honey. Taste: Honey and toffee sweetness progresses into a fruity, citrusy combination of apricots and oranges (and to a lesser extent, grapefruits). Again, there’s pine and even some breadiness and mint roaming around the taste. However, the grapefruit and pine flavors really come to live and amplify on the assetively bitter finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-light body that is at times chewy and oily. Drinkability: In all honesty, this reminds me of Avery’s Maharaja with the Racer 5 being just a bit more drinkable.

On tap at the Vintage Estates in Boardman, thanks Nuts. Smells like, well, what do you think? IPA, very highly hopped but without spruce or pine aromas, more like floral hops and strong. Looks like a typical pale yellow american lager, but just maybe a teeny bit of haze. Clear for the most part, the haze may be some condensation on the outside of the glass. Has a bubbly head composed of small and large bubbles. Does not fade. Very bitter grapefruit rind taste, especially back where the bitterness is detected. Does not seem to be as bitter as other IPA, but perhaps I am getting used to it. Certainly not IIPA territory. Medium low carbonation. Finish is bitter lingering medicinal quality that hangs for a while. What can I say, typical IPA. Lots of good IPA taste like this.

On tap at O’briens. Pours golden amber with a white head that quickly disapates leaving no head. Aroma of pine and citrus. Maybe my palate is changing, I used to love thdhops. I would have like a little more malt to balcance out the intense hops.

Bottle. Pours a clear golden color with a medium white head that is mostly lasting. The aroma is all about hops. There are notes of citrus and pine which prepares you for the first taste. The flavor has much of the same but has enough malt to balance things out. The bitterness is present but not distracting. This is a very well made beer. It goes well with chili.

Draft- This brewer does not disappoint. Had this beer in the bottle before, but never rated it. Both times, it was great. Citrus/Piney hops were both present. So was the high alpha bitterness, that was backed up by some pale malt. Delicious.

UPDATED: JUN 24, 2008 (draft) a straight up, solid ipa. nice grassy aroma. a reasonable bitter that doesn’t overwhlem the flavoring hops. the distinguishing feature is the soft malt finish. the pairing of strong hops with smoothness of malt makes for an interesting palate and a very drinkable ipa. while it reduces the crispness i typically associate with the style, its nice to see a well balanced variation. definitely worth a try.
