BBD: 8/21/17

2015 BJCP Category: 21A American IPA

AROMA: Moderately strong orange and lemon citrus (though I suspect the lemon character may be oxidation). Slight candy/floral character, too. 8/12

APPEARANCE: Rusty copper-orange hue (9-11 SRM). Large creamy beige head. Retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Moderately-strong orange and lemon citrus (lemon flavor very likely due to oxidations). Some floral hop flavor as well. Bitterness doesn’t seem as strong as advertised (75 IBUs) - could be due to age. Malt base creates for a general sweetness, but nothing specific. Slight lingering citrus pith and faint astringency. No alcohol presence. 14/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-full body; medium carbonation. Surprisingly smooth creamy texture. No alcohol warmth for 7.5% ABV; but doesn’t feel like such a big beer. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: When fresh this can be world class, but a typical bottle is just plain good. 7/10

Gotta get in on that hoppy hour while it's still hot. Looking to crush these while I can. Hella good IPA -

tntracey (110) - Hood River, Oregon, USA - JUN 18, 2017
A good and solid IPA, but at the same time not an earth shattering IPA. Might be accustomed to the bigger IPA’s of WA and OR. That said, there is nothing about this beer which is negative. Drink up, cheers...!

Panzuriel (2389) - Westerville, Ohio, USA - JUN 17, 2017
Appearance: Hazy bright copper. Finger of white small bubbles.
Nose: Bitter grapefruit zest, pine resin and a bit of funk. Bit of caramel
Taste: Pine and citrus hops with toast and caramel. Bitter from start to finish. Good balance
Body: Medium and lively.
Parting thoughts: A very solid, by the numbers, above average IPA. Very drinkable.

One of my all-time favorite go-to IPAs. Bitter and proud of it, piney and resinous with a dank-citric core. Toast and caramel provide a solid base, while orange and herbal hops lead to a clingy bitter finish. Smooth texture, pine, grapefruit and weed in the aroma. Good to finally have Bear Republic in these parts. Tasty brew.

Aromas of lemon, pinesol, and flowers. Taste is pine, grapefruit peel, lemon, sweet bread malt, a touch of caramel, and floral hops.

erickok (6036) - Leuven, BELGIUM - JUN 3, 2017
Really great hop mixture, classic considering the modern hop boom but absolutely not old fashioned. Fresh enough and just perfectly balanced with a light toast. Very good on flavour for the abv. Rightfully so so highly regarded. Crazy I never had it before. (33cl bottle from market at Stinson Beach)

GuideDogSaint (1767) - Xiamen, CHINA - JUN 1, 2017
355ml bottle at True Bearing Alehouse, Xiamen. Pours slightly hazy golden with a white head. Aroma of pine and citrus with mint. Bittersweet finish. Balanced.

(Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA) Bottle 355ml at home, served into a shaker, ABV 7.5%
Deep orange coloured body, clear, with a good sized and thick white head on top.
Aroma of caramel malts, oranges, grass, faint spices, some grapefruit on the back.
Taste has citrus, oranges, grapefruit, piney finish, tropical fruits too, nicely hopped. Pretty bitter finish.
Medium thin body.
Nice one.

bergstaden (3259) - Røros, NORWAY - MAY 21, 2017
Golden with a white head - Fruity hop aroma - Malt body to support a hop profile that has fruity and herbal, spicy flavours - The hops with a good bitterness goes into the finish - This was good
