Racer X® is an uncommon Double India Pale Ale which puts a California twist on English brewing traditions by adding an assertive hop aroma and bitterness that compliments the firm malt backbone. Like its little brother Racer 5, Racer X® is balance in a bottle.

650ml bottle from the Malt Shoppe in Tosa. No bottle date, but don’t believe that was there a month ago or would have picked it up then. Pours an amber orange with an off-white head leaving some nice coats of lace. Aroma has sweet tangy fruits, pine, some sweet malts and citrus. Taste is of sweet toffee, spruce-y pine, chewy resin, tangerines, some other citrusy fruit and honey. Fuller than medium bodied, the blend is solid and there is somewhat of an alcohol presence. Finishes tangy and to the honey sweet side of bittersweet. A white whale over the years that never seemed to get to the Midwest, or was missed whenever it did. More an old style DIPA than anything extreme. Just a solid tasty drinker, with a good blend of flavors, smoothed out with the honey. 14.1

Pours a hazy, dirty orange. Aroma is pleasing enough, sweet malt and booze. Taste is prominent booze, strong bitter, soapy!, I like bitter, but this is a bit much.

UPDATED: OCT 26, 2016 Draft at Bru Craft. Hazy orange copper pour that started with a thick tan head that reduced to soapy foam. Huge syrupy Imperial IPA loaded with tropical citrus flavors. Mango. Guava. Tangerine. Apricot. Passionfruit. Pineapple cores. Raw sugar cane. Eucalyptus. Lemongrass. Pinecones. Alcoholic finish. Feels much bigger than the listed 8.3% ABV. Extraordinary explosion of flavors but ultimately feels a bit too harshly sweet and bitter.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 1/22/2017. Pours slightly hazy deep orange/light copper color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Dense dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of huge grapefruit, tangerine, peach, apricot, pineapple, mango, melon, lemon/orange peel, pine, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, light toffee/nuttiness, and floral/grassy earthiness. Incredible aromas with fantastic complexity and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/pine hops, fruity yeast, and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; with great strength. Taste of huge grapefruit, tangerine, peach, apricot, pineapple, mango, melon, lemon/orange peel, pine, caramel ,brown sugar, toasted biscuit, light toffee/nuttiness, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine/grassy/citrus peel bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, peach, apricot, pineapple, mango, melon, lemon/orange rind, pine, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, light toffee/nuttiness, and floral/grassy earthiness. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/pine hops, fruity yeast, and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready, sticky/resinous, and lightly slick/syrupy balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Minimal warming alcohol for 8.3%. Overall this is an incredible DIPA! All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/pine hops, fruity yeast, and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. Seems to be American hops and English malts; and comes off as a amazing hybrid of American and English IPA styles. Has a good sized malt profile, but is never overly sweet. Enormous amounts of juicy flavors from the combination of hops and yeast notes. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Moderate roasted and caramel for the malt, heavy pine and orange peel for the hops, light soap for the yeast, with date, brown sugar and honey in the background. Head is average size, frothy, off-white with slippery lacing and good legs, and is mostly diminishing. Color is murky amber. Flavor starts lightly to moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and moderately bitter. Palate is medium to full, oily with a lively carbonation and a lightly astringent and alcoholic finish. A nice smooth DIPA with perfect balance.
