Bottle. This is an absolutely terrific beer to look at. Beautiful ruby red/amber coloring with a tan head that lasted forever and left lacing all the way down the glass. Both the hops and malts come through in the aroma. Very nice. The flavor is mostly of caramel malts, but the hops once again come through. A very enjoyable brew to drink and to look at.

GABF 05. Pours a deep brown with a floral and hoppy aroma. Flavor picks up where the aroma leaves off. Good stuff.

Bottle (650ml). Poured deep clear ruby brown (if this were a single malt, Id marry it) with a massive light brown foamy rocky head that leaves a thick sticky lacing. This ones very hoppy (yes, typical full-spectrum Bear Republic hop-hit), but theres more resin/woodiness and sweet roasty malt - and yeast - than Im used to, also reminds me a bit of Belhavens "petrol" nose and taste. The taste on this one is wonderfully balanced - this *is* hoppy, but there are many other elements - spruce resin, mild roast malt, a hint of caramel, lots of leaf and moss character that comes out more as it warms. Mouthfeel is quite encompassing, somewhat flat, but complex. One of my favorite BRs to date.

UPDATED: OCT 6, 2006 There is a pleasant herbal hop aroma that includes brown sugar. Dark red, with a very thick head that lasts. Several flavors. I can see the Scottish ale influence in the sweet malt, and this is combined with lightly bitter hops. Somewhat sweet.

Big red pour. Sweet, floral, caramel aroma. Great hop flavor backed by some sweet malt and bitterness. Fairly straightforward but satisfying. Dont know if Id call it a "Scottish Red Ale."

Bottle. Brown color with a small off-white head that diminished slowly and good lacing. Complex sweet hop aroma. Medium to full body with a creamy texture. Full complex flavor with a moderate bitter finish. Very good strong ale.

Damn fine beer. Im a big fan of Bear republic and figured I would try something different than my staby of Hop Rod Rye. This was a pleasant change! Yummy as could be. Beautiful color, wonderful lacing as usual. Good stuff!

Beautiful beautiful poor. Poured with the most amazing head Ive ever seen. A huge layer of rocky head that took about 15 minutes to settle down. After that, chunks (yes, chunks) of dense head remained on the top and side of the glass. You could feel the chunky thick head go down your throat. Oh man, so good. A nice cloudy auburn with lots of sediment flecks. Smells of lots of piney hops mixed in with some scotch and caramel. Taste is initially very dry, with a lot of hops hitting your tongue. Flavor then becomes more balanced as a nice semi-sweet caramel malt hits your tongue and slides all around, leaving your mouth happy. Finishes with a nice butterscotch and spice note. Medium bodied. This is a great beer. Only complaint here is that there is too much of a hop presence on the nose and in the flavor. Could use some more balance. Great scores for appearance and overall uniqueness. I suspect this would age perfectly. Bear Republic makes some great beers and they just became one of my favorite brewers with this one. Good job.

Had on tap at the brewpub in Healdsburg. Yummy! Dark orance appearance, light, off-white head, decent lacing. Find some caramel in the very sweet fragrant aroma, along with some piney spruce. Flavor has a strong citrus presence with a caramelly undertone. Very thick mouthfeel. Overall, excellent, could have drank it all day.

Deep amber-brown in color and mostly translucent with a foamy, off-white head, leaving nice lacing tracts as we go. Aroma is signified by sweet nectar, butterscotch, English toffee, peat and wood soaked brandy. Rich caramel, pine and birch kick start the flavor. This is one bitter Scottish ale, like no other. Tingly woodsy elements. Sweet ribbons of caramel - to toffee - to butterscotch and then back again are doing battle with the IBUs. Fairly fuller bodied, amped up, and finishing with cedar and pine bitters. Definitely a mutt in the world of Scottish ales, but Ill take him should it ever come to that again.
