COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A wheat wine, Ashnan displays great depth of character and complexity. It features bold tannic notes that integrate very well with the tropical fruit flavours. Aging in white wine barrels contributes wood and wine character to the noticeable alcohol presence, and enhances a dry finish. A beer with a wine-imposed identity crisis, Ashnan sits comfortably between, offering the best qualities of both. History & Style Beau’s LCBO Barrel Aged Beer Feature for spring 2014 is inspired by the art and mythology of ancient Mesopotamia. Ashnan was the Mesopotamian goddess of grain, an apt symbol for this barrel aged wheat wine. This rare and relatively new beer style is similar in strength to a barley wine, but with a higher ratio of wheat to barley for a more subtle, less malty flavour. Tasting Notes Ashnan wheat wine pours a light gold colour, and is moderately hopped. This lively, effervescent golden ale abounds in tropical fruit flavours, notably pineapple. The wine-like character is pronounced, with buttery chardonnay aromas giving way to oakiness. The finish is gently warming. Food Pairings Grilled halibut, piri piri chicken, raw oysters, grilled vegetable/chevre wraps Technical Specs ALC./VOL.: 9.8% INGREDIENTS: Local Spring Water, Organic Barley & Wheat Malts, Organic Hops, Brewer’s Yeast. March 21, 2014 - with blankboy, gregclow, mabel and jercraigs - 600ml bottle. Overheard from mabel: "I am DEFINTELY boring!" ... Hazy light gold, minimal head. Fruity tart aroma, some alcohol and floral bitterness (7-). Taste is pungently floral and somewhat acidic - like apricot and oak resin - really appealing. Light body, mild carbonation, quick tingly finish with emerging oak tannin in the aftertaste.

600ml bottle. Pours a huge foamy bubbly off-white head and has a clear pale golden appearance. Aromas of wheats and earthy hops. Flavours of oranges, citrusy hops, slight sourness, a bit tarty as well. The alcohol is fairly well hidden. Not too bad, but a tad disappointing.

Smells slightly like a sour white wine. Pale golden pour, hazy. Strong, slightly alcoholic, quite winey. Full bodied, moderate hop bitterness, very concentrated wheaty flavour, quite woody as well. Very complex and strong beer, took me off guard but it grew on me.

600 ml bottle. Pours a clear orangeish pale golden with a thin white head. Aroma is apricots, mangoes, tart, vanilla, wood. Flavor is lemon, orange, apricot, mango, guava, white wine. Finish is grapefruit, lemon, superb tartness, white wine, some hoppy notes. Lingering wood, vanilla, tropical fruit, and a bit of a carbonated blitz at the end. Full body, soft mouthfeel, medium to somewhat strong carbonation. A great surprise!

(Rating #5984)

pushkinwow (2909) - Ottawa, CANADA - DEC 10, 2014
Bomber. Pale copper with an of white head that fades to a thin ring around the glass. Too cold at cellar temperature and somewhat offensive with acetone notes which don’t completely fade. White raisins, fermented on (bad experience in university), peach skin, macintosh apple. Moderate body and carbonation, slightly sweet with an alcohol burn, some unripe papaya and grape finish with some oak.

Spab (4124) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - OCT 23, 2014
600 ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a clearish golden colour with small white head. Aroma is quite vinous with some fruity sweetness, wood, spice and some yeasty esters. Flavour is also big on white wine character, lots of oak, fair amount of peppery spice and a little sweet fruitiness. Bit of burn in the finish. Interesting beer.
