COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This strong & dark beer, inspired by the Alfred bog, is our very first seasonal offering. Featuring bog myrtle, or sweet gale, harvested from the wilds of northern Quebec. This ancient herb was used in brewing hundreds of years ago and offers bitterness, a sweet aroma and herbal spicy notes.

Metalflake (73) - Les Coteaux, Quebec, CANADA - MAR 31, 2015
600ml bottle bought at Le Gobelet in Dorion, QC. Poured into a tulip, colour is an attractive deep, hazy red-orange. 1cm head that dissipated quickly, no lacing on the glass. Aroma is full of berries and herbs - I didn’t get as much coriander as others here seem to have, but it’s there. Taste is sweet, malty with little bitterness. Finish is slightly tart, with a mild aftertaste of red currants and spice. Overall not my favourite style of beer, but drinkable nonetheless.

Draught @ beerbistro: Dayna’s Beer of the Moment, and highly recommended by our server. He gave us the whole background on the bog myrtle and we couldn’t resist. Comes quite dark, red in colour, decent foamy off-white head. Aroma was complex with lots of spice, to be honest I had no notepad and I chased it with a few more, so trying to remember the subtle nuances ain’t happenin’. I can tell you that the flavour was quite nice, very reminiscent of Maudite, but with no aftertaste to speak of. Quick hit of bitterness on the tongue, but quickly makes way for a nice subtle sweetness, slight watery, lots of spice and pepper. It’s actually very interesting and our entire party of three all enjoyed it thoroughly. Good work, guys!

Big-ass ceramic bottle shared with HogTownHarry, blankboy, jerc & tupalev - my bottle from the brewery (thanks, Steve!). Deep garnet-brown with a large off-white head. Aroma is very nice - toasted grain, sweet dark sugar, earthy spice/herbs. Flavour has notes of cocoa & chicory, toasted malt, and an interesting herbal note (presumably the bog myrtle). Very unique, and very good - nice job, guys!

Sweet, fruity, earthy and herbal in the nose. Hazy brown body is topped by a decent, if large bubbled, off-white head that lasts fairly well. Flavour is sweet and fruity up front, almost a cross between a saison and a dubbel - very Belgian inspired to me. Moderate bitterness and herbal, earthy notes round out the flavour. Medium body is filled by a gentle, expansive effervescence. Really great texture on the tongue. Cellar temperature. Bottle purchased at the LCBO on Danforth Rd. in December 2013.

lesifflebiere (1928) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - DEC 2, 2014

codfishh (202) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 18, 2014
Pours a hazy brown thick fluffy white head, aroma has some sweat bready malt and dark fruit. Flavor has a strong malt background with some peppery notes and a slight sourness. Enjoyable beer.

simardsam (261) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - MAR 14, 2015

wolffish (661) - Saint-Donat, CANADA - JUN 21, 2015
Plutôt intéressante celle-ci! Ça sent un peu plus que ça goûte mais tout est bien en place et juste assez épicé pour le style. C’est bien fruité mais toutefois un peu mince en bouche. À acheter de nouveau c’est certain!!

UPDATED: JUL 28, 2017 A cloudly pale yellow beer that is low on the IBU scale. Light carbonation with a peaty aftertaste. I would try this again and I’m interested in trying other Gruits
