I was eager to try this Gruit after trying the Heather Legend from Cassel which did quite a good impression. I’m happy to say that the positive trend continues. A bit like a spiced beer, but a more natural taste to it, more blended into the drink, more refined. Definitely a special taste with the myrtle, I wonder if I could age this beer. Pours hazy copper colour with a thin tan head, looks like bogwater. Aroma is floral or herbal. Taste is sweet with a slightly bitter, sour finish. There are notes of caramel, herbs, and clover. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. There’s an odd, off putting herbal finish (likely the myrtle) which really prevents this from being better than it is. Looks ugly with a dull, light brown and just a thin head. Heavily phenolic, bubblegum nose is wonky. It has a reasonably full body, touch of bitterness, not a lot of bog myrtle character. Brown color, hazy, dull. Some sweet caramel, but the myrtle is really strong, and to me it tastes like dish soap, the mouthfeel too is soapy in the final. Alcohol feeling.
There’s a reason if these beers and methods have been forgotten.
One of the worst tasting beers of all time. They claim to use an older method of brewing this one, somethings that are forgotten were done so for a reason. On tap at St. Augustine’s, pours a hazy dark amber with a small off-white head. Aroma brings earthy notes, winter spices, and toasted caramel. Flavour is pretty spicy, with winter spices, toasted caramel and light earthy notes. Bog water certainly doesn’t sound appetizing but this is pleasant enough. Okay. Aroma is spicy rye, caramel, lavender, and pepper. Taste is roasted malts, caramel, honey amd fig. A light earthiness arroves on finish with, still, a little pepper spiciness. 600ml bottle pours an amber brown color with a finger of off-white head that leaves some spotted lacing on the glass. Aroma is herbal with some pepper and fruity notes and hints of wood. Taste is a herbal bitterness with a fruity and malty sweetness finishing dry. Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
