Our annual feBREWary coffee + beer collaboration with Ottawa’s Bridgehead Roastery returns in 2014 with Collabrrrewnaut, a coffee-infused classic Bohemian Pilsner. This beer was lagered for six weeks then cold-infused with a Bridgehead Peruvian micro lot espresso roast, to create a harmonious juxtaposition of light and dark.

History & Style
The world’s first blond lager, Bohemian pilsners were first brewed in the mid-19th century. The style originated in the City of Plzen (Pilsen), part of the present-day Czech Republic. Known for its light, clear colour and clean, crisp finish, our Collabrrrewnaut sends the pilsner brewing tradition hurtling space years ahead of its time with a espresso-roast coffee infusion.

Tasting Notes
Collabrrrewnaut has an herbal, spicy noble hop aroma, with a subtle yet ever-present espresso note that lingers like the scent of coffee in a busy Czech café. The beer possesses a mild bitterness, with a clean dry finish. Restrained nuances courtesy of the coffee suggest dried figs, nutty richness and chocolate as they intermingle with the classic Pilsner style.

Big head, cloudy golden. Taste has a dry finish, a bit of coffee but not overwhelming, quite a bit of roast despite the light colour. Scent is grainy, same with the taste. A bit interesting in the texture from the coffee, decent, weird idea for a beer though.

February 26, 2014 - at Bar Hop - on draught. Colour me skeptical. Clear and oily-looking light gold with a small mottled off-white head. Aroma really is solid pils (grassy/leafy cereal with a little honey) and coffee grounds - weird, complex, odd. The coffee bitterness takes a big step back in the taste mostly solid lush oily cereal grain with plenty of dry grassy bitterness. Slick, average body, chewy, light carbonation, medium dry finish with some re-emergence of the bitter coffee grounds in the aftertaste; Not bad - still weird idea though.

Pours a clear gold colour with one finger of lasting head. Aromas of citrus, bread, and a hint of coffee. Taste matches the aroma with a dry coffee flavour finish. Medium bodied with high carbonation. Interesting but not my cup of tea.

[8963-20161230] Bottle. Coffeeee earthy aroma. Slightly hazy, orange yellow body with a medium-lasting foamy off-white head. Very coffee and earthy nut grain flavour. Medium body is a little thin. Very interesting, a little odd. (7/3/7/3/13) 3.3

Bought as part of the Winter sampler pack. Smells mildly hoppy. Pours a medium to light unfiltered gold colour. Head with large bubbles disappears to some decent lacing. Clumps of yeast can be seen at bottom of glass. Taste is more like a European Pils, but not as hoppy. It has an almost spice to it, but no coffee taste. Good carbonation. Mild bitter aftertaste. Overall I was happy to try. The bitterness and the malts played off each other. I would not buy again. MB. The Beer "Bear"on

Pours clear blonde with a beautiful orange hue, fizzy white head, dissipating quickly. Aromas consists of a smooth filtered brewed coffee with some herbal hops qualities in the back. Light bodied, crisp, nice hop bite ending on a chocolate and coffee note. Love the balance of the coffee in this crispy pils. Well done

Bold attempt for a pilsner. Got this one part of the 4-pack holiday season. Tasted it 6 months after being bottled, which is beyond the 4 months freshness recommendation on the bottle.

Keg at Ottawa Winter Brewfest. Disclaimer: This event used plastic cups, which may have prevented my ability to fully appreciate this beer. Hazy golden, rich head. Doughy coffee aroma. Mid dry with medium body and rounded mouthfeel. Dough, coffee and grass. Mid bitter finish.

Clear yellow body, white head, some lacing. At first I thought the aroma was almost a jalapeno pepper or something, it was very herbal and grassy. But it was actually coffee. Taste is semi-sweet, with a touch of coffee, a bit watery. I’ve had other coffee-based pilsners. This one was okay, but odd and not entirely successful.

600ml bottle pours a slightly hazy golden orange colour with a finger and a half of white head that retains well and leaves some spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma is coffee and grass with some grainy notes. Taste is a grassy, spicy hop bitterness with a malty sweetness finishing with some coffee. Light bodied with good carbonation. Overall, this is a nicely done pilsener with the added bonus of a subtle coffee presence. Recommended.
