Pro Am No. 4 Belgian Dubbel • 7.6% alc/vol Beau’s Pro-Am Series is a salute to homebrewers, true innovators of our craft — beers designed by amateur brewers, brewed at Beau’s. Tim Gregory won the 2011 Toronto Beer Week Homebrew Contest with the recipe for Doc’s Feet Dubbel, so we brewed it up with him this summer. Complex, pronounced fruitiness and malt character are present in this Belgian-style brown ale, along with spicy notes and alcohol warmth. Doc (Tim’s cat) – approved!

This dubbel poured a cloudy, deep red colour with a nice foamy head. Scents include caramel, ripe fruit, spice and a little vanilla. First swig was smooth and creamy with flavours of spice and malt with some raisin. Finish is sweet with ripe fruit flavours lingering. A little hop on the palate.

Pours a huge frothy brownish head. Has a hazy coppery brown appearance. Aromas of barley malts, mild cane sugar. Flavours are yeasty, some light malts, resin hops, mild spices. Mouthfeel is chalky and slightly astringent. Medium bodied. Not bad but needs a more distinctive flavour.

(Rating #5674)

Best looking lucky bottle ever! This is strong stuff. Far stronger than I should be drinking right now. First tried this one on new years. Actually thought I reviewed it then. I guess not. It’s that strong I guess. So anyway. This is my kind of beer. A strong Belgian ale. I love my doubles and triples and this is an amazing double. It’s got all that awesome Belgian goodness. The fact it doesn’t have one taste that it’s completely different from nose to mouth to finish. It’s not a quick swig and a taste, it’s a journey. This particular one starts mellow with only weak scents that hint at what’s to come. A bit of spice, some hoppiness and is that coriander? The initial mouth is awash in spices. Clover, a touch of ginger something sweet. That sweetness grows. Some caramel or maybe toffee there, but still with some bite to it. Like cinnamon covered toffee maybe. That fades to a bit of hoppy harshness. Reminds you that you are drinking a beer. Then there’s a warming tongue tingling aftertaste that reminds you that you are drinking a strong beer.

De couleur rouge-brune. Au nez : caramel et fruit sèché. Les saveurs sont similaire au nez avec une note de fruits confits. Une dubbel assez savoureuse. Elle n’a pas un grande complexité et de profondeur. Toute fois délicieuse.

2014/02/09 - Pours a cloudy brown-amber colour with a small, fizzy, khaki coloured head that quickly disappears. Aroma is prunes, raisins, tobacco, spices and woody notes. Taste is dark fruits, tobacco, brown sugar, spices and booze. Mouthfeel is medium with lively carbonation and a sweet, mildly boozy/warming finish. Flavours seem light and subdued, but it's better than most from Beaus. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
