COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gilgamesh old ale has been aged in rum barrels while resting on its yeast in storage, which contributes to a full-bodied and malty character. Complex fruit esters reminiscent of figs and dates add to the richness and sweetness of this dark, strong wine-like ale. History & Style Beau’s LCBO Barrel Aged Beer Feature for spring 2014 is inspired by the art and mythology of ancient Mesopotamia. Gilgamesh, a legendary king of Mesopotamia, is the central character in The Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the earliest surviving works of literature. Deliberately long-aged, the brew team took inspiration for Gilgamesh from several different versions of the robust, malty Old Ale style. Tasting Notes Sweet rich malt and dried fruit aromas are abundant and are reflected in the flavour. Date and fig-like notes merge with some baking-spice notes of cinnamon and nutmeg, and just a touch of earthiness. Wood-aged characters including vanillin are subtle but present, as is a dark rum undertone. Gilgamesh displays well-integrated alcohol warmth.

March 21, 2014 - with blankboy, gregclow, mabel and jercraigs - 600ml bottle. Slightly hazy brick red with a solid creamy/bubbly tan head. Very mild aroma - but vegetal; caramel malt. Taste is cleaner - herbal, some tart fruit and alcohol - not much rum, but it is a tad boozy. slick, weak carbonation, building harshness in the finish. Meh.

Pours a small frothy cap and has a murky brown/coppery appearance. Has a woodsy, raisin like aroma with hints of resin and spice hops. Flavours of raisins, dark roasted malts, a bit of yeast. The rum does come through a bit from the barrel, maybe a little too faint. Pretty smooth and slick mouthfeel. Pretty good.

Bottle, about a year old now. Hazy dark mahogany with no head. A heavily spiced nose with cinnamon, pepper, cardamom and nutmeg, vanilla, yeast, oak, raisin and fig, rum, some booze, wet grainy maltiness. High carbonation and moderate body, sweet with a slight tang and bitterness on the finish.

I’m finally getting around to reviewing this after sipping away on a large portion of the half case I had cellared. This has bottle-aged a little under a year at this point – pours a hazed light cola color with a fine pored 1 finger cap that retains well. Plenty going on in the nose – spices, vanilla, sweet licorice, toasty- burnt treacle aromas. (The rum barrels imparted some great aromas to this brew.) The aroma is much like a malty-musty rum and coke. Flavor follows aroma to a certain degree in the front, but mid palate there is something going on where a not unpleasant sourness hits with some hop tang – then it finishes out rich but silken and warming. Very approachable for a beer of this strength and greatly improved with a few extra months in the bottle. Great barreled offering – very adaptable – I have paired this with beef roulade drenched in wild mushroom and wine reduction , I also had one with a fine Dominican robusto cigar – thumbs up on both.

(Rating #6040)

pours hazy light brown with a nice light beige head showing good retention and lacing. demerara and red wine more than rum - surprisingly blending in quite well - spicy hot wine or spicy rum; raisins and brown sugar - mini-tartelette-like, some currants, smooth oak, sweet toasted pecans, spices, wood, english-y angles - as per yeast and hops. light carbonation, medium body - oily, semi-sweet and grassy-spicy-woodsy finish. relatively simple, sweetness-wise, but a tasty sipper it is.

Bottle, shared with phantomhennes, heavyleavy, and TvM at game night. Dark walnut brown with an average beige head. Lots of sweet dark malts here, molasses, figs, spicy nuances. Sweet but not big enough to be sticky. Actually quite nice.
