Mates with Dates is a truly experimental offering. The base beer is loosely modeled on an English brown ale. After the first fermenation we added crushed dates, cane sugar, more wort and Trappist Ale yeast to get a second fermantation going.

History & Style

Mates is the second beer in the Beau’s Friendship Series – collaboration beers created with other brewers we know and love. Mates was created in partnership with British brewer Alex Barlow of ALLBEER.

Tasting Notes

The taste of dried fruit and spices are delicate but unmistakable in this luscious brown ale. Fruity to taste, then finishes dry.

Food Pairings

So close to Valentine’s Day, we imagine this beer goes well with holding hands, going to movies theatres, attending opera, and whisperings of sweet nothings. Also, goat cheese.

On tap at Wvrst for the debut of Mates With Dates. Pours a deep red/brown which in the dimly lit establishment looks almost purple. Head is average off white with virtually no lacing. Quickly dissipating. Beer was served freezing cold at which point it was unbalanced and underwhelming. After letting it warm up, the flavor improved considerably. Aroma of sweet dark fruit, caramel malt, floral hops and spice. Can’t really identify the fruit as dates...7.7% Alcohol is extremely well integrated. Taste is sweet with a bitter finish. Initial taste is sweet followed by a moderate bitterness. minimal sourness. Medium bodied, thick texture with average carbonation. Overall, this was an interesting beer but I’ve got mixed feelings about it. I enjoyed the sweetness, the dark fruit, the use of the Belgian yeast and well integrated hops. In some regards this was like a fruit beer, and the description of "loosely based on a brown ale" is quite accurate. Meanwhile this beer is not really Belgian in style.I am not sure what to call it. Mates With Dates does an excellent job combining the characteristics of several fantastic styles but the end product and overall profile is more "interesting" than something I could see myself drinking over and over again. Well done! Love the beers you guys have been making.

600ml bottle. Unfiltered brown, large, creamy off-white head. Aroma is brown sugar, dates and Belgian yeast twang. Taste is malty and lots of dried fruit. Body is quite full. Overall, this combination worked pretty well.

[bottle from brewery] Plenolic and faint band-aid aroma with some sweet dates. Hazy-bronze under a white ring. Dry, phenolic clove flavour with some celery, black pepper, and a faint, sweet date note. Delicately balanced. Light body, medium carbonation, despite gushing, clean finish.

A lightly hazed reddish copper ale with a thin off white head In aroma, a light sweety fruit malt with faint caramel, not strong. In mouth, a smooth sweet malt with light wooden notes, light alcohol warmth, OK but nothing special. On tap at Wellington Gastropub, June 19 2012.

ApisAles (1575) - Greenbelt, Maryland, USA - JUN 18, 2012
Murky brown/red our with a tan head. Aroma is spicy, Belgian yeast notes, dates, dark fruit, maybe a hint of cherries? Flavor is super dusty, dry, fruity, could almost stand to be a touch sweeter, but not bad. Tasty beer.

Sammy (12361) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 1, 2012
Subscription series bottle. Smell is prune and something sugary. Reddish brown colour with one-quarter inch of head and thick lace. Some olive oil taste. So-so drinkability.
