Pours a dark brown with an off white top and a little lacing. Aroma is brown sugar, raisin, dark malts and wheat. Taste is dry wheat and raisin. Not bad beer, although no where near the $17 price tag. BenH (3436) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - APR 22, 2012
Bottle at craig’s. Hazy amber with a white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, ripe fruits, sweet fruits, leaning towards banana or bubblegum but not quite. Similar taste, nice fruity yeast notes, figs. Slightly sweet. Decent whitecap (289) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 11, 2012
On tap at Wvrst for the debut of Mates With Dates. Pours a deep red/brown which in the dimly lit establishment looks almost purple. Head is average off white with virtually no lacing. Quickly dissipating. Beer was served freezing cold at which point it was unbalanced and underwhelming. After letting it warm up, the flavor improved considerably. Aroma of sweet dark fruit, caramel malt, floral hops and spice. Can’t really identify the fruit as dates...7.7% Alcohol is extremely well integrated. Taste is sweet with a bitter finish. Initial taste is sweet followed by a moderate bitterness. minimal sourness. Medium bodied, thick texture with average carbonation.
Overall, this was an interesting beer but I’ve got mixed feelings about it. I enjoyed the sweetness, the dark fruit, the use of the Belgian yeast and well integrated hops. In some regards this was like a fruit beer, and the description of "loosely based on a brown ale" is quite accurate. Meanwhile this beer is not really Belgian in style.I am not sure what to call it. Mates With Dates does an excellent job combining the characteristics of several fantastic styles but the end product and overall profile is more "interesting" than something I could see myself drinking over and over again. Well done! Love the beers you guys have been making. HeistAlmighty (1156) - Saint John, New Brunswick, CANADA - DEC 31, 2012
600ml bottle. Unfiltered brown, large, creamy off-white head. Aroma is brown sugar, dates and Belgian yeast twang. Taste is malty and lots of dried fruit. Body is quite full. Overall, this combination worked pretty well. MXD (304) - Gatineau/St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, CANADA - MAR 8, 2012
Pours hazy brown with off-white head. Aroma is ... interesting, to say the least -- three-part figs, alcohol and dark sugar. Taste is interesting as well : the dates are much more obvious, but so is the cane sugar, to a point where the beer has a strong feel of rhum, without being liquorous at all. Finish is rather long, but smooth, and the hops, while doing their job, are certainly not at the front. All in all -- an interesting brew that I wouldn’t necessarily be looking to try again, and that has absolutely nothing to do with the price, which is extremely high but can probably be explained by the price of the raw ingredients.

2012-03-10. Very dark brown large foamy brown head fades fast. Sweet aroma, sugary, fruity character, like raisins or dates, presumably the latter. Flavour is similar, sweet sugary malt base. Fruity character. Average plus bodied palate. Bit boozier than preferred, it might have been better served slightly colder. Pretty decent. Bottle shared by Tuqueboy

Sample from bottle at the Only Cafe Spring Beer Fest. Pours a murky orangey brown with small off-white head. Aroma is mostly dark fruit and wheat. Flavour is dates, grains and light spiciness. Modest bitterness in finish. Interesting ApisAles (1575) - Greenbelt, Maryland, USA - JUN 18, 2012
Murky brown/red our with a tan head. Aroma is spicy, Belgian yeast notes, dates, dark fruit, maybe a hint of cherries? Flavor is super dusty, dry, fruity, could almost stand to be a touch sweeter, but not bad. Tasty beer.
