Wild Oats Series No. 11 That classic Hefeweizen character with an intense banana aroma, but with an added smokiness from malts that were home-smoked at the brewery with maple wood (Canadian maple at that, too!). Simply put, banana pancakes with bacon.

November 27,. 2013 - at Bar Hop; on draught. Hazy and bubbly light gold (green tinge!) with a lovely lasting creamy off-white head. Plenty of smoke/peat in that aroma, mild estery fruit in back - no alchol. Taste - whoa! - medicinal/rope/iodine peat up front, banana behind; light alcohol. Light body and carbonation, quite astringent, starts with fruit and big smoke peat in the finish and aftertaste. Nice smack up the head of Islay on this one - nice - nailed it!

600 ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a hazy golden colour with thin creamy white head. Aroma is fruity, citrus. Taste is smoked banana! Yes, smoked banana. And it’s a pretty decent beer. Quite refreshing.

Bottle from the Beau’s Oktoberfest mixed pack. Pours a light and hazy yellow with a thick white head that dissipates quickly. Aroma of banana, bread dough, lemon zest and wood smoke. Flavour follows - banana, lemon and smoke all in good balance, with bready yeast playing a nice backnote. A bit of lemon pepper in the finish. The body is a bit thinner than I’d like, but otherwise, a pretty successful hybrid.

Had this at Oktoberfest. Pours a cloudy yellow with a pillowy white head. Aroma is banana esters, wheat and a small smoke. Taste is again an upfront hefe with a small smoke in the back end. As a non-smoke fan, it works for me.

Bottle, pours a golden colour, aroma is light smoke, tastes of a light hefe with a light smoke, kind of tasted meaty from the smoke, overall okay.

My Bottom Line:
This soft Rauchweizen suggests wooden smoke, bananas and wheat in a quenching but thin vehicle.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam quickly depletes to a ring atop the hazy pale blond.
-Carbonation is too low for the style, imho. (lightly prickling)
-The flavor profile is a tad watery at times.
-That being said, the flavors are nicely cohesive.

On tap at bar hop. Very light cloudy, true to style. Yeasty and yes, banana on the nose. The smoke unfortunately wasn’t as prominent as I hoped. Sessionable, refreshing, but not too challenging. It’s balanced because it lacks anything extraordinary.

Pretty much what it promised it would be. Banana character of a heffy, with lots of smoke and wood. Not bad, but I prefer an un-smoked Hefeweizen.

Light yellow colour below a fizzy, quickly dissipated head. Banana esters give way to some smokiness in the aroma. The flavour is much the same with a smokey finish. The mouthfeel leaves something to be desired as it is quite thin.

Bottle - Smells like heavy yeast banana with light smoke. Pale gold with a thin head. Lightly smoked with banana. Interesting.
