First black IPA. A curious concoction. Both very malty and very hoppy bitter. A fairly challenging drink, and not seemingly in the winter evening category which stouts and porters fill. Interested to try more.

2/3 arbitrager. Decent black IPA. I was expecting a bit more flavour to be honest but very palatable. Not particularly hoppy or malty

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 21B-black). Can 33 cl - Batch L1529 (BB 25.11.17). AROMA: medium roasted malt notes (cocoa) with medium-low fresh like hop aroma (pine-like). APPEARANCE: very dark amber color and clear. medium ivory head with good retention. TASTE: similar to the aroma with a balanced flavor of roasted malt (coffee like) and a fresh hop presence (citrus-like). medium-high bitterness with a roasted and bitter finish. PALATE: medium-light body with medium carbonation. OVERALL: altough its nearing its best before date, still has a lot of very nice notes.

UPDATED: OCT 23, 2017 Chocolate brown with floating yeasties. Huge tight beige head. Aroma, plenty of stoned fruits, fleshy at first with dried cranberries, dates and apricot to follow. A subtle smokiness once the head fades, toffee undertones and some tobacco. Complex as fuck. Sticky, oily texture. Big hop flavour with smoky chocolate and woody malts. Crisp juicy fruit too that’s quintessential to BT brews. An array of flavours that slide into a long bitter finish. Immense blend.

Toffee and dried fruit on one side and some fresh hops and lightness on another, amazing blend.

Grumbo (4120) - Ipswich, Suffolk, ENGLAND - SEP 28, 2017
Can at the Spread Eagle, Ipswich. Pours almost black with a lasting off-white head. Aroma of hop, chocolate, tropical fruit and moderate roasty notes. Moderate sweetness, medium bitterness. Medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation. Good brew.

jasonbenali (244) - Kent, ENGLAND - SEP 19, 2017
Pours dark brown to black with thin off-white head and great lacing.

Aroma is pine, pineapple, orange peel, burnt caramel and coffee, with the dark malts on the lighter side and an IPA trying to get out! Taste has some sweetness then leads to a bitter and good length finish with a nice hint of booze.

Very good Black IPA.
