Like everyone with a soul, the first thing we think about every day is coffee, the solver of all life’s problems. Brewers are incredibly territorial, and each morning engage in the “Dance of a Thousand Filters,” a death match with only one loosely upheld rule – turn your back on brewing coffee and you will not get any coffee. Sometime this ritual can last minutes even hours while the jet black potion drips down into the waiting pot, under the gaze of a hundred waiting eyes. It has been said said (by Confucius, I believe*) that beer is food for ideas, and coffee is the fuel to make them happen. The two are something of a Ying and Yang, but share a discernable number of similar qualities, the most prominent of which being their intense and complex flavor profiles. With “Spresso” we looked to combine the best of two already incredible worlds and rituals, providing a full on espresso experience, in a hefty, well rounded Imperial Stout. We know something about beer, but when it comes to coffee, our long time friends at Caravan Coffee Roasters are the caffeinated captains of bean wizardry, and we brought them on board for the brew. After running tests and trials, a consistent pattern of feedback emerged – “MORE COFFEE.” So, when it came to brewing this beast we ended up infusing around 80 kilograms of coffee into the beer in two parts. Part of the wort was drawn off and infused with the first 40 kilograms of ground coffee at around 92 degrees Celsius. Then a month later we infused the fermenting beer with the remaining 40 kilograms as whole beans at around 10 degrees Celsius. It finally emerged from its coffee catacomb a full on, roasty, bittersweet beast with a subtle hickory and treacle richness. The perfect marriage of the two things that get us through the day. *We do not believe this.

Piwo w kolorze czarnym nalewa sie z cienka warstwa lekko bezowej drobnopecherzykowej piany. Dominuje kawa zarowno w smaku jak i w aromacie. Nuty palone i gorzka czekolada z lekko rozgrzewajacym alkoholem i odrobina slodkiego karmelu. Piwo bardzo gladkie i kremowe z wysyceniem na niskim poziomie.

Can @Bir&Fud Bottega (Rome). Nera, densa, impenetrabile, schiuma color cappuccino molto persistente. Al naso sentori di caffè e cioccolato fondente, cannella, liquirizia. In bocca è cremosa e avvolgente, dolce con finale amaro e caffettoso. Corpo pieno, carbonazione media. Eccellente!

hohops (1200) - Kent, ENGLAND - MAY 17, 2017
Appearance- black, no light escaping, a thick half-finger light brown head. Aroma- coffee dominates. Blackcurrant hints, fudge cake, vanilla, roast malt, chocolate, leather, dark fruit traces. Taste- roast malt, coffee, bitter dark chocolate, coffee and chocolate cake, burnt malts. Easy to drink- not the fullest mouthfeel, but coats the mouth well. Bitter roasty finish. Lovely coffee stout.

Ibrew2or3 (9047) - Tempe, Arizona, USA - MAY 1, 2017
Poured up at Ratebeer Best 2017 Beer Fest where it exhibits a totally black void of a body that supports a light mocha colored head of foam. The aroma offers up dark roasted malts, a sliver of burnt malts, a thin chocolate note, a faint marshmallow sensation and then a nice earthy roasty oily smelling coffee goodness. The taste is similar with roasted malts and dark burnt maltiness blending into a pleasing layer of dark roasted coffee flavors that have a kind of rich oily coffee edge to them. This is a solid coffee imperial stout with the coffee well integrated into the roasty malts

Caffè puro. Nera e schiuma nulla marrone. Al naso malto tostato e caffè. Al palato amaro di caffè, tostatura, dolcezza. Carbonazione media, corpo leggero. Come Imperial al caffè è davvero super.

Can 33cl de Malt Attacks. Brune presque noire complète, col épais crémeux moka, léger doré au verre. Arôme, café infusé, caramel, espresso, moka, Effet rétro presque de café au lait, onctuosité se ressent. Petite pointe de fruits noirs en rétro. Palais est épais, tonne de café, grillé super sans avoir cet effet habituel épicé de grains de café. Petite touche de mélasse, grillé et moka, booze perce en rétro avec un bel effet de chocolaté et petite amertume citronnée et touche épice tirant sur la réglisse et effet fruité noir rappelant le raisin sec et date. Malt revient sur la fin, épais avec un café perdurant super.

Canned, 330 ml, courtesy of Max. Shared with him and JFK10000. Pours black with large creamy light brown head. Malty, roasted, very strong coffee, moderate sweetness with lasting dry bitter finish. Smooth. Medium to full bodied. Very nice.

Pours black with medium head. Aroma: tons of fresh coffee, dark chocolate. Taste: nice coffee-like with roastiness in the background. ABV well hidden.

Black body, with a big, dense, creamy, lacing, dark beige head.
Aroma of Espresso, coffee beans, cocoa, liquorice, some caramel, subtle dark fruits.
Tastes pretty similar, with some more subtle booze.
Full, creamy mouthfeel, with a soft carbonation.
Finishes roasty, medium dry, wooden, with lots of coffee again, some liquorice, some cocoa, subtly alcohol warming, the smooth coffee stays forever.

Very tasty! Coffee-forward and really smooth to drink for the ABV, with just a slight alcohol presence. Not the most complex style example, but lovely stuff for coffee-lovers like me.
