2012-09-14. Very dark brown body, nice head and lace. 3+ Light roast, modest bitterness, very lightly leafy hops, mild base malt, hops grow as you go and linger in the finish. Bitterness in the second half of the glass is more significantly hoppy. 7+ Aroma is mild, roasty, muted leafy hops. 6+ Average plus bodied palate. It grows on me, it starts with very little hop character but gains just enough along the way to be interesting and rather pleasant. Not sufficiently assertive for my taste though. Dark, black pour, with an ample beige, rocky head. Great roasty aroma, some good notes of coffee, and some solid piney hops. The mouth feel is bang on, and the carb is perfect. The hops some through more in the end, but the roast just mingles great with the hops. A super nice roasty, hoppy finish. a great example of the style. Bottle from the brewery. Bottled on September 2nd, so about 5 months old - not sure how it ended up lingering in my stash for so long, but it still seems in pretty good shape. Dark brown body with a very slight haze and a huge and creamy off-white head. Aroma and flavour both strike a good balance of roasted and slightly charred malts and moderately sharp citric hops. Nice notes of dark chocolate, bitter coffee, orange peel and pine. Finish is subdued at first, but after setting the glass aside due to being called away for a bit, I returned to a warmed up beer that released a whole lot of citrus peel bitterness. Quite good! mabel (9246) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 30, 2012
[4773-20120914] Tap. Mild toasted coffee aroma. Dark dark reddish brown body with a quick foamy off-white head with thick lacing. Bitter grainy citrus peel hops flavour. Full body. Tasty and bitter. (7+/3/7/4/16) 3.7

The beer pours a coca-cola colour with a generous light tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, weak citrus hops, and caramel. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavour is mild grapefruit, roast, and caramel. Not well balanced.

Black color with creamy head. The aroma is hoppy and quite fruity. Roasted malt flavor, smooth mouthfeel, good hopping, expected bitterness level, and overall it’s well balanced.
625 ml bottle from the brewpub (Recipe 1, Batch 2). Pours a quite dark brown with a hint of orange and modest-sized tan head. Aroma is roasted malt and modest earthy, citrusy hops. Flavour is roasted malt and earthy, grapefruity hoppiness that doesn’t overpower. Medium plus body. Carbonation is on the fizzy side of average. A little tame, but it grew on me. cfrancis (3409) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - NOV 15, 2012
Thanks to jercraigs for this. Pours black with a moderate frothy beige head with great retention. Aroma is deep roasty dark malts and bitter chocolate. Taste is a great balance of roasted malts with floral and earthy hop bitterness. I really like this one. kevinsenn (2182) - Waterloo, Ontario, CANADA - OCT 20, 2012
Bottle from Beer Academy retail store. The aroma is full of sweet tropical fruit, and later some roasted malt as it warms up. Even knowing this was a dark beer (from the name), the appearance was still shocking after the aroma - very dark. Thin beige head, and some little hop bits at the bottom. Unusually, this one seems to start off bitter and end up sweet (with roasty and bready malts). Fruity hop hints. Thin-bodied. A good example of a Black IPA. Deep brown-black pour with a fast-fading tan head. The aroma is very hoppy and fresh. Pine and a little bit of citrus and some soft resin. Moderately hoppy on the palate but less than it would seem from the aroma. Decently earthy. It's still hop-dominated but I'd love to see more.

Emphasis on the hop taste, roast is pretty minor, though still not bitter. Decent orange citrus flavour. A little watery but tasty. Not the style though still good drinkability.Lacey and dark bodied.
