COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Appearance: A heavy-looking, black liquid slowly leaks out of the bottle and here it sits, without head, without lace. Smell: Essentia Bina carries with it a ponderous aroma to go with such a hearty appearance. Heavily roasty with notes of coffee and dark chocolate and scent of smokey condensed molasses given a few good shakes of non-brewed soy sauce and dash of spice. Taste: A taste of well-roasted malts fused with a bitter, nearing acrid taste of burnt sugar and a light background spiciness from the addition of fennel seeds. Hint of charred wood. A hotness and coffee flavor akin to cheap, off-brand Kahlúa. Some dark, dark chocolate. More of the basic soy carrying over from the nose and lasting into the roasty, earthy finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Sans carbonation, so it remains a bit weighty on the tongue. Drinkability: At times reminiscent of WWS, but the noted soy sauce character also reminds me of dear ole Triple Bock. It’s an interesting brew, albeit somewhat tiresome to the tongue -- what a great relief it’s housed in a scant 250mL bottle.

tasting on 7/30/10. pitch black pour with no head - really like the density of this one. nose is full of roasted malt, licorice, oak and molasses. big body with peat and intriguing spice flavors - especially towards the tip of the tongue. not really liking the overall tone of this one through the mouth. roasted finish with more moss flavors.

Pours a rich brown color with a almost no head. Aroma is roast, coffee, toast, oak, vanilla, chocolate, and some alcohol. Flavor is caramel, toast, coffee, roast, chocolate, toast, oak, vanilla, and a sweet chocolaty finish.

Bottle, RBWG weekend. Pours an inky black body, incredibly thick looking, with zero head save for a couple bubbles. The nose is intense roast and chocolate with lots of alcohol and a nice smoke accent. The flavor is very ashy with a heavy bitterness and tons of overpowering alcohol. Mouthfeel is thick, heavy, clingy, and extremely hot. The nose on this was pretty nice, but the flavor was pretty bad. Reminds me of the same type of experience as drinking a World Wide Stout.

cheers to tpd975 for the share. pours pitch black, light tan/mocha head, golden lace. aroma and flavors, peat, roasted malts, soy like mouthfeel, chocolate and molasses, thick palate, leaving a syrupy finish that at times can be a little too much. No way this is 16%? Leaves an interesting lingering smoke profile.

Thanks to madmitch76 for this fine brew. This tiny bottle (with solidly rusty bottle cap that truly speaks {somehow} to the yumminess inside) pours inky black void with dark tan head and a solid legginess around the glass. The aroma is rich yummy goodness from rich chocolate, molasses, toffee, caramel covered oak, a modest level of burnt malts and some malt roastiness. The taste is smooth rich and as yummy as the nose with milk chocolate, velvety dark chocolate, spicy oak, molasses, burnt malts, more sweet molasses and then a modest level of boozy heat going down (virtually no heat for a beer this big). Smooth delicious. I’d like to have a case of these little rusty capped bottles.

(Bottle from Ølbtuikken) Poured almos black - some reddish hints at edges. Didn’t form any head. Aroma contained roastedness, liquorice, hint of fennel and alcohol. Palate was full bodied and dry with low carbonation. Flavours were roastedness, saltiness, mildy soy sauce, ash and liquorice. The very long lasting aftertaste contained liquorice and mildly bitterness. Reminded a bit of Beer Here Mørke.

The Tampa crew hits another rare gem. Thanks greg, I think! Pours a black color. Brown head. Sweet aroma, tons of prunes, molasses, milk chocolate, sweet coffe candy. Flavor is smooth and oh so rich and sweet. 16% alcohol...SAY WHAT???? Molasses, prunes, chocolate, light oxidation...Delicious!

(Bottled, 0.18l) Almost black with a tiny, quickly fading head. Aroma of dark malt, anise, licorice, some sourness, touch of alcohol. Flavor is seaweedy-salty, very roasted-malty, soy-sauce-like, mildly sweet, tarry-peaty. ABV well hidden. Very full-bodied, thick, almost flat. Like Mørke with water removed - nice, full and salty. 6249
