In 17th century Britain beer was the drink of the common man. Wine was for the wealthy, tea was for the weak and water was usually quite poisonous. Men, women and children drank beer morning, noon and night. The most popular type of beer was porter because of its modest price and its nutritional value. One of the most popular porter brewers, and often incorrectly credited with the invention of the beer, was Ralph Harwood. This beer is inspired by the brown porter made at the time. TASTING NOTES Enters the glass with a deep mahogany with a small tan head. The nose quickly fills toffee and sweet chocolate. Smooth in flavour and with a big mouth feel without significant bitterness from the hops. Ends full, creamy and lush. FOOD PAIRING Should be paired with food as it could have been served at Harwoods time. A steak- and kidney pie should work well or for the slightly more modern touch serve it with a porter house steak smothered in a wild mushroom and oyster gravy.

Draught at Ølbaren, Copenhagen
Dark color, almost black with mahogany shades; medium sized creamy beige head. Nice aroma of roasted malts and bread. Full bodied; moderate roasted malt flavor, dark chocolate, light residual sweetness, some bread; correct bitterness. Very well balanced. Nice.

Bottle. Dark brown with small beige head. Aroma and taste of roasted malt, chocolate, licorice, the beer is lightly sweet with nice light roastiness and bready notes in finish. Medium body, soft carbonation. Nice.

Bottle. Pint. Deep brown with semi-thick, light brown head. A little sediment in the glass. Perfect lacing and head retention. Aroma is something between old-school english porter and imperial porter. You can find here nice chocolate, cocoa nibs aromas with medium caramel and nutty notes. This chocolate makes the aroma pleasant and smooth and breaks the old-school porter boring features. Taste is semi-sweet, slightly bitter and earthy in the end. Medium body, creamy and smooth texture, average carbonation, finish is chocolate and semi-sweet. In general very good porter with nice chocolate notes.

Svesse (8803) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - APR 8, 2016
(Bottle) Dark brown colour with frothy, beige head, leaving traces of lacing. Malty, roasted nose with caramel, chocolate, dark rye bread, a touch of coffee and roasted malt. Malty, roasted taste with coffee, dark chocolate, caramel, a touch of liquorice, black rye bread and a balanced roasty bitterness in a fairly dry finish. Medium body, with just a touch of sweetness. Solid and well made porter. Very nice.

Bottle. Black with latte coloured head. Rich chocolate aromas, followed by coffee and vanilla. Immediate presence of alcohol, then chocolate, coffee, vanilla and enjoyable bitterness. Smooth palate and a dry finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

16.9 oz bottle. Dark brown with a bubbly tan head. Nose is coffee and cocoa with hints of wood and prune. Smooth medium body with a tingle. Taste is mocha, licorice, fig and faint orange peel. Classic porter deftly executed.

TaxiDriver (1830) - Stadland, GERMANY - NOV 26, 2015
A strong smell of toffee, chocolate, some liquorice, a soft touch of roasted malt. The beige large foamy head has a long duration, the body is black. The taste of chocolate, toffee, malty but not sweet. You can nearly chew the beer. A rather heavy body, very creamy with a rather soft carbonation.

In short: warming roasty dark ale.
Pours very dark, almost black, with some garnet reflections. Massive brown head, long lasting, with some lacing. Roasty, sherry-like nose, some coffe and licorice. Medium to full bodied, average carbonation, some viscous texture. Taste is quite roasty, coffee, some cacao, licorice, raisins. Vinous character detected in aroma but not in flavour. Warm alcoholic finish, alcohol noticeable but well integrated. Some dry and bitter finish. Very enjoyable.

Deep tan head on an opaque body aroma is sweet and grassy. Taste is effervescent and nutty. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Very good porter, very good drinkability. Deep brown chocolate coloured body. Above average mouthfeel.

Savagesteeler (138) - Warszaw, POLAND - MAY 31, 2015
Aromat, głównie toffi, lekkie nuty czekoladowo rumowe.
