I had the Bay State ESB, im not 100% sure this is the same thing. Dark copper color with good lace. Aroma is a nice but weak blend of hops and fruity malts. Finishes fairly bitter, like most of theirs its ok, but boring. omnivore (270) - San Francisco, California, USA - MAR 9, 2003

Aroma was fruity and hoppy, very pleasing to the nose. Color was a deep cloudy tan. Flavor started off with a subtle hoppyness that opened up into a strong bitter with a long linger. Nice beer.
Dark amber with a small white head, good lacing. Aroma is light, mostly citrusy hops, with a slight maltiness in the back. Flavor starts malty & a little sweet, then ends with a good, long hoppiness. Very creamy and thick feeling in the mouth. Quite well balanced. Jake Barnes (456) - St. Louis, Missouri, USA - AUG 2, 2002
This almost seemed like the IPA with a bit more malt. Not really an ESB in my opinion. michaelm18 (118) - Boston, Massachusetts, USA - MAY 26, 2002
Bitter but not too bitter. Creamy texture, very good beer.

UPDATED: JAN 3, 2004 Cask at NERAX '02: Biscuity flowers in the aroma, hazy almost orange color, Nice bitter full finish. I could drink this all night, which I guess is the point. JohnnyBGoode99 (4) - Massachusetts, USA - MAY 1, 2002 does not count
If you like the bitter stuff, you’ll like this. Not as good as Ipswich Ale though. budguy2142 (24) - USA - JAN 30, 2002
Nice and bitter, good ESB. Not for everyone though. Gregory (357) - Pullman, Washington, USA - JAN 20, 2002
pleasantly bitter, a very nice beer, but I’m not sure that it is worth $5 for a pint.
