An old English style barleywine, this deep reddish-hued beer smells of dark dried fruits and toffee. Hints of vanilla and oak round out the full malt flavor, with a lingering mild bitterness. Enjoy before or after dinner in front of a fire in your favorite arm chair.

In short: A rich malty burgundy beer with moderate bourbon presence. Pretty good
How: Tap at Tap-NY 2012
The look: Mostly clear light ruby-brown body topped by a beige ring of foam
In long: Nose is pecan pie, caramel, vanilla, bourbon. Taste is a bit on the sweet side, caramel pie sensation, medium bourbon presence, nutty notes of almonds, wood, some alcohol heat. More drinkable than expected which I find is often the case with a woody beer because it dries out the finish a bit. Nothing is overdone here, nothing exceptional but overall well balanced, I liked this one more than I thought I would. The last beer I rated at Tap-NY 2012 festival, I was getting pretty drunk, and after the last-call I tried explaining to the security person that I was on ratebeer and I just needed a few more minutes to rate this last beer but he didn’t leave me alone and kept asking me why I wasn’t wearing any pants.

Shared bottle at Craft. Poured turbid, deep brown with tan head. Some woodiness, dark fruit, toffee in the nose. Tasted of oaky caramel, some fig, plum, and some late heat.

650 ml bottle thanks to Dan P. Pours a deep brown / garnet color with no head. Some particles of yeast suspended in the liquid. Aroma is heavy on dark fruits (raisins, plums, dates) toffee, grass and a bit of sour oak.

The flavor just as heavy on the dark fruit as the aroma leads me to believe. Layers of dark fruit. The body leans on the full side. Also displays a mild sour note from oak. The bourbon does not come through at all. I’m sure the sour note is from the barrel but it totally lacks any bourbon. Ok.

Bottle... Not sure when this was bottled, but could definitely tell there was some age here. Poured cloudy near opaque, dark amber, red with a thin forming, light tan head. Aroma had some oxidation with a sweet tea tone as well. Mild oxidation, sweetened black tea notes, date and prune-like fruits with a hint of bourbon soaked wood. Caramel sweetness, quite sweet actually, along with some alcohol warmth that lingered in towards the finish.

Location: Sampled at TapNY, 4/26/14

Aroma: The nose is heavy bourbon, with some toffee malts, vanilla, and caramel

Appearance: The pour is brown, with a red hue, a beige-brown head and average lace

Flavor: The flavor is much the same, heavy on the bourbon with some strong malt flavors as well

Palate: The body is medium, with a decent amount of ABV burn, but somehow remains drinkable

Overall Impression:
They called this Jack Daniel’s Aged at the festival. I actually quite enjoyed this one. There’s a ton of bourbon on the nose, taste, and feel, but it is surprisingly drinkable considering how strong the bourbon is.

A: Deep Brownish Hue, Passes Mild Light, Off White Head Ring, Decent Lacing

S: English Malts, Sweet Bourbon, Mildly Boozy

T: Sweet Bread, Sweet Bourbon, Mild Raisins

M: Decent Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Mildly Sweet, Mildly Boozy

Overall, it was good...just not great, too sweet with the english malt flavoring and bourbon barrels together.

Bottle. Poured a dark, amber color with some small wispy tan head. Aroma is sweet, vanilla, bourbon, some tart notes? Bourbon, tart soured, wood. Wish I could like this more. Some alcohol, but rounded out. Probably soured a bit.

Bottle, caramel colored pour, pretty light body. Sweet booziness, lighter Bourbony notes, malt heavy. Light mouthfeel. Ok

2013-08-16. Crisp mahogany brown body with a modest tan head. 3++ Aroma is sweet with sugary malt character, notes of raisins and caramel. 7+ Flavour is sweetly malty, mild bourbon in the background. Sort of an English character to the malt. Smooth average plus bodied palate. 3+ Enjoyable but the base beer comes off as overly simple, which means that there is not a lot going on besides malt and bourbon despite a fairly restrained bourbon character.Bottle At Campground Brewdown.
