Artisan Golden Ale. Ale aged in oak barrels. Barrel aged & bottle conditioned. Aged in large oak casks and refermented in the bottle. Oro de Calabaza is brewed in the Franco-Belgian tradition of special golden ales. Spicy and peppery with a gentle hop bouquet and the beguiling influence of wild yeast. UPDATED: DEC 4, 2013 Bottle. This is the first honest to goodness gusher I’ve opened. We’re talking beer everywhere, non-stop spouting until I poured a glass. Oddly enough, the pour didn’t erupt into foam. Somehow throughout the spray, I got a very nice pour with a level white head. The brew is quite cloudy and light golden yellow. My concern heightened, I take a sniff. Man, it smells great. Awesome! Lots of tart pineapple citrus in the nose along with a tasteful sourness that reminds me of sour grapes. A bit of pepper is noticed too. I didn’t get assertive spiced aromas here, it’s all about the citrus and wild zest. It’s a nice drinker with just a slightly puckering finish. Rich citrus notes carry throughout the drink. Sourdough, pineapple, grapefruit, plantains, mm mm. I’d say this is actually one of the least sour beers from Jolly Pumpkin that I’ve had, with the exception of the Bam Biere. I liked this one quite a bit, but I think I enjoyed the depth of some of their other offerings a bit more.

750 mL from Colorado Liquor Malt. I need to drink more Jolly Pumpkin. This beer is so full bodied, yet soft, balanced and funky, yet accessible all at the same time. Notes of pineapple, wool, cheese, peppers, citrus and gentle oak are all over the place. The palate is so soft it’s like drinking a liquid pillow. Revisiting this beer has made me pledge to continually consume more Jolly Pumpkin. La Roja, you are next.

Bottle. Bought Aug 2017; BB undated; Drank Jan 2018 - Hazy pale yellow in colour. Large foamy white head. Fruity; sour fruity, citrus lemon, rind, green apples. Yeasty; light funk. Spicy; peppery. Malty; light caramel, wheaty. Hoppy; light hops. Quite dry. Moderately sour citrus fruity yeasty spicy throughout. Good. (2018-01)

I do think that this one is more of a sour ale than a belgian ale. It is a very good pumpkin ale, part of the LCBO 2017 Summer Beer Program.

UPDATED: JAN 31, 2018 Bottle. Appearance: clear light yellow golden, nice thick white foam getting into thin laces, low and subtle carbonation. Smell: very subtle brettanomyces, perhaps bread/cereals, very smooth vinegar. Taste: notes of lemon, bread and very smooth funk, nice low sourness and sugar, great texture and feel, medium drinkability. Overall: high quality and awesomely balanced beer, was expecting more complexity, but still highly enjoyable.

UPDATED: DEC 25, 2017 Bouteille datée du 20/04/2017, bue après 8 mois. Robe dorée trouble surmontée d'un col de mousse blanc et rocailleux. Arômes de levures sauvages fruitées, cuir, essence de chêne douce, pamplemousse, vanille, épices légèrement poivrées. En bouche, agrumes épicés, levures sauvages boisées, léger cuir, pamplemousse et mangue, zeste de citron, houblons floraux. Texture semi-onctueuse et corps moyen. Excellente.

UPDATED: DEC 21, 2017 Wow. Pours hazy pure gold with bright white head. Aroma of lime sorbet, pepper, barnyard and of course oak. Very oak forward with a hint of that malt peaking through the wild funk. not over dry but a clean finish. Very interesting.

Bottle from Clapton Craft. Failed Xmas cellaring attempt here... not upset though as this is sublime. Perfect marriage of the wild yeast character, apple sweetness and subtle oak. Really really top drawer stuff
