3fourths (9367) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 1, 2009
UPDATED: APR 26, 2011 2009: dark and muddy appearance with deep tobacco and cola brown color. close to no head but carbonation is present. nose is heavy banana/trappist yeast esters: overripe and burnt bananas dominate the nose and suggest something like dirty, phenolic weizenbock. chocolate / raisin / nut malt sweetness, but it’s difficult to appreciate past the overbearing aged/moldy banana character. medium-full thickness with far too much sugar, leaving it syurpy and cloying. bourbon? vanilla? not really. smoke? chocolate? a little. creamed bananas? oh yeah. objectively speaking it’s a bit of a mess and comes across as somewhat mediocre.

2009:Draft sample @ Bottleworks was an improvement but not a great one. less banana, more booze, same body.

2010: bottle at Hair of the Dog. no head but light to medium carbonation. none of the browned banana-bomb weizenbock qualities of the 2009. all of the oak, tobacco, leather, fig and smoke that I expected from the first batch. probably in the 4.2-4.4 range. sublime liquid.

Pours deep dark brown with low tan head. Aroma of bourbon, molasses, raisins, dates, figs, this nose makes itself known from a mile a away!!! Incredibly rich but not unbalanced, very enjoyable. Taste is boozy, sweet, rich, raisins and dried fruit again, quite balanced but very fiery. No carbonation in my bottle, which may be a unique thing, but drags overall impression down. Rich, fiery, smooth body with flat carbonation.

Bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck, Vichte. Black/brown colour, no head. Flat, no carbonation. Sweet, malty, notes of unripe apples, smoke, paint thinner, unripe vegetables. Hmm, strange combo of flavours, not really what I expected. Maybe a bad batch? Not the best beer I tasted.

Bottle from mcberko or bytemesis-sorry I can't remember who but thanks all the same! Dark cocoa brown color, minimal carbonation even with an aggressive pour. Nose is sweet caramel, light marzipan, very light coffee and dark roast malts. Taste is sweet with a bitter finish. Flavors of burnt caramel, toffee, dark roast malts. Rich, slick mouthfeel. Awesome strong, old ale.
