Starting with this naturally pure Abitibi Esker water, Mons Abbey Dubbel is brewed with passion and devotion to time-honored Belgian tradition from a blend of Pilsen, Munich and Carafa malts, with Styrian Gold hops for bitterness and Hallertau Hersbrücker hops for aroma, finished with spices, such as licorice, anise and bitter orange peel.

Rating datant du 8 avril 2017. Bouteille en format 330 ml disponible via leur caisse de Mons assortis. Les épices et le caramel ressorte. Clairement la meilleure de la gamme Mons.

UPDATED: JUL 27, 2017 tried on tap at the woolly in guelph, ontario. minimal head, opaque and dark in colour. notes of dates and black currant are hidden under the brutally strong tastes of vanilla extract (note: not vanilla, but that harsh flavour of straight vanilla extract) and licorice. i never thought i would find a beer too licorice-y, but this beer has no subtlety. i get the impression that they hoped you would pretend you liked it because it tried hard enough and you wanted to impress someone. it's okay, but definitely not something to seek out.

Very minimal head, dark brown ruby body with no visible carbonation. Strong molasses and licorice aroma, sweet mud kinda stuff that you get with these types. Flavour is heavy molasses, sugary Aunt Jemima syrup, and lots of cloying alcohol. No finesse to this equation, just brute force to build this thing and it shows.

Bouche: Noisettes - Muscade - Caramel

My Bottom Line:
This sweetish Dubbel aligns raisins and caramel under coriander and licorice for a rich, desserty example of the style.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam quickly recedes to a ring atop the deep brown haze.
-Mouthfeel is sugary and prickly.
-Flavor profile also evokes vanilla and sasparilla.
-Drinkability is lower than the usual Dubbel’s.
-Alcohol is well hidden.

Bouteille de 750 ml. Arôme d’épices, de fruits secs, de malt et d’alcool. Goût d’herbes, de houblon et de lime. Bière assez intéressante.

Bottle. Reddish brown in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of dried pit fruit, rose wine, black licorice, and sweet malts. Flavors are of sweet dark caramel malts, light anise-like spice, and cooked apple. Lighter bodied than expected, with a bit of a chalky note on the back end to balance out the sweet and the fruity notes. Decent for the style, but lacking in intensity.

ljthiessen (1438) - Winnipeg, Manitoba, CANADA - FEB 18, 2017
Bottle. Dark brown, nearly black pour with a reddish hue, tan head. Aroma is dark fruits, Belgian yeast and spices, licorice, citrus, anise, plum, raisin, lots going on. Taste is a little sweet up front, the same dark fruit and spices, very flavourful but lighter body than expected for the ABV. Tastes more like a Belgian strong dark ale than a dubbel, but tasty.
