Bottle, LCBO. Nice brown body with a good long lasting beige head. Aroma has some earthy-smokey notes along with some caramel malt and a touch of brown sugar. Flavour is quite nice with lots of sweet malt and with underlying hints of the flavours inferred by the aroma. Nice body, fairly alcoholic finish and a plasant lingering aftertaste. Nice beer, but not as robust as I had hoped based on some of the recent reviews.

(5ooml bottle) Summer 2004 offering at the LCBO. Pours a medium beige head with a brown body. Enormous smell of caramel malt. Flavour is slightly more smokey than I had anticipated. The Lagavulin of the ale world? Very good.

Aroma of dark fresh bread. Full bodied. Dark fruits and hops. Slightly smokey.

500ml brown bottle. Ruby coloured, tan head is thick. Aroma of sweet malt with a little bit of zesty hops. Medium bodied, dark malt taste melds well with hops. A trace of alcohol and bittereness in the finish.

daboskabouter (1470) - Fergus, Ontario, CANADA - SEP 21, 2004
Very dark sparkling ruby color with a decent brownish head. Fresh sweet malty nose with an upstart brown sugar presence. Light touches of dark fruit and a light alcohol feathering also in the nose. LIght spritz at the beginning leads to a quick sweet malt body. Bitterness adds to the body in the middle with a firm alcohol kick also making itself known. Finished lightly bitter and just a tad thin and sweet.

UPDATED: MAY 1, 2005 Everything about this beer speaks of strength! A beautiful, rich ruby red with a strong and fresh aroma that mixed hops and a touch of sweetness. Not much of a head, but a pile of flavour - hops, malt, caramel and even a hint of smokiness. This is a strong ale that goes down easy with a pleasantly full, but not overpowering aftertaste. Instantly, it has become one of my favourites - and since the LCBO only stocks it for a short time, I’m off to the store to stock up.

Tasted in Toronto. Obtained from LCBO, part of Fall beer selection. Tasted in a dimpled mug. Appearance is deep copper red, thin white head. Aroma is faint, with a hint of sweetness and alcohol. Flavour favours the sweet / malty side, fairly upfront alcohol in the taste, hint of smokiness and finishes with a slight hoppy note.

This was a delightful treasure from the weekend. Malty, with very little, if any, hop aroma. Very, very sweet... Alcohol was apparent, and the flavours were long-lasting.

Hoppy like Scotch, and full rich taste, like prune and fig and carmel and chestnut brown colour. Good hops. Good Autumn beer. Was medium on mouthfeel, almost like it was on-tap I think attesting to freshness. Some peatiness.

Bright, clear-ish chestnut. Fine finger of beige foam. Sweet (caramel), toasty, nutty, & mildly smokey aroma w/ light spicy, earthy notes. Full, oily feel. Sweet, toasty, malty flavour of caramel, molasses, brown sugar & nuts.
