An opaque brown beer with a disappearing brown head. The aroma is sweet with chocolate being most dominant, but also contains hints of alcohol. The flavor is sour with notes of chocolate as well as alcohol - I think this one is too old. Oakes (19711) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - MAR 13, 2002
Black; aroma of Vietnamese coffee; sweet, sugary, milky, smooth - nicely done and right on for the style. Dogbrick (14454) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - DEC 22, 2002
Very dark brown with a thin dark beige head. Oaty and creamy aroma. Flavor is not as sweet as I was expecting, but this was still pretty good, like all Bell's Stouts are. Had a nice body and a slightly bitter finish. I'll look for this again next November. argo0 (14127) - Washington DC, USA - AUG 1, 2002
Black body with small espresso head. Very sweet aroma --cherry, olives, alcohol and licorice. Sweet flavor, strong malty with olives and roasty cherry. Too sweet for me (plus, I'm not a big olive fan). hopdog (13452) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 3, 2006
12oz bottle acquired in trade with ClarkVV (thanks!). Poured a dark black color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of chocolate, roasted malts, lactose, and some dark fruits. Tastes of dark fruits, chocolates, roasted malts and lactose. There was also a ver light sourness to the taste.

Bottled: Pitch black coloured. Not much head. Sweet aroma of chocolate and some fruit. Sweet, fruity, light spiced and coffee flavour. Rather bland flavours. Some sourness is there, probably due to the age of the bottle. Ends on a dry light sour note. Rather boring beer. alexsdad06 (11561) - West Chester, Ohio, USA - NOV 23, 2007
12 oz. bottle (from notes). Pours dark, dark brown with a small diminishing tan head. The aroma is mainly sweet milk chocolate. The flavor is again sweet chocolate with a slight touch of a dark fruit, perhaps plum, as well. Medium bodied. A touch on the watery side. hopscotch (11526) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - JUL 7, 2003
Dark brew with just a rumor of a well-tanned head. Quickly and totally dissipating.
The nose holds chocolate, coffee and vanilla notes.
The flavor is a bit sweet for the low ABV. Malty and not-so-rich with buttermilk undertones. Not much of an attempt at balance.
Medium-bodied with a watery mouthfeel and mild carbonation. Short, sweet and pungent finish. Not great, just really good... which is substandard for Bells! DocLock (11258) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 17, 2005
Thanks to Robert’s Reality for this one. Pours black with almost no head. Aromas are roast malt, oaky chocoff, and some nutmeg. The flavor is tart, with a definite cherry krieky element, backed up by some roasty malt and chocoff sensations. The palate is on the light side for a stout. I wonder if this one was the precursor for their Cherry Stout? MartinT (10239) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - NOV 27, 2002
UPDATED: OCT 25, 2005 Old black grapes dropped in a very creamy coffee...Tart background and chocolatey surface...Fizzy carbonation (for a stout?) and a body struggling to keep up with the rich maltiness...A distinct frown appears...
