3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Bells on All Stouts Day. Aroma has a hazy distant smell of bourbon but is lost in the flavor. This is one of the reasons barrel aging isn’t for all beers. It just muddies up an otherwise good stout.
I have not drank this beer (in its original form) in nearly 6 years. So I got a bottle today. Not much has changed. It is still damn good. nuplastikk (6420) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - JUN 21, 2015
Tap at Maduro pre GTMW 2014. Odd licorice, anice aroma. Kind of flattish cask body. Chewy woody, bourbon notes. Some vanilla, but more earthy licorice. OK, not something I’d want a full portion of though. Travlr (25876) - Charlotte, North Carolina, USA - SEP 7, 2014
Draft at Smoke & Barrel. Dark maroon color, beige head. Aroma of chocolate > vanilla > brandy. Taste is dry cocoa powder, coffee grounds. two7offsuit (448) - Massachusetts, USA - SEP 1, 2014
Pours black with a tan to brown head that is thin. Aromas of bourbon and sweet fruit. Subtle flavor of bourbon but strong flavor of Apple. DrSilverworm (9671) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - AUG 16, 2014
~5oz pour on tap at Maduro during GTMW. Black color. Thin khaki head. Good loose bits of lace. Dark fruit in the flavor. Oxidization, mild roast. Tastes a little off. Medium body. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. Light slick finish. Not velvety or chewy like standard kalamozoo, a little more rough. Moderate sweet taste, moderate bitter, lightly spicy. Disappointing. Probably an older keg past it’s prime, I’m imagining.

On tap from MBG Summerfest. Was hoping for BB Expedition and was very disappointed this was a Saturday only. I went on the wrong day for sure. Anyway this one has a dark thin texture. Almost fruity feel and taste. A sweet finish. Very surprised in the feel. I would say the original is better. The fruit is kinda apple which was a weird surprise to me. A nice woody taste that gave balance to the sweetness. Not bad. deyholla (12038) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - AUG 3, 2014
On tap at Ashley’s. Pours black with a creamy brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a decent amount if green apple with a some roasted malts, light bourbon and dark grains. Flavor has same green apple with light bourbon, dark grain and a bit of roast. umich03jm (3513) - Flat Rock, Michigan, USA - JUL 28, 2014
Sampled at the 2014 MBG Summer Fest. Dark brown pour. Aromas are vanilla, oak, licorice, light chocolate, and light dark fruit. Taste slightly sweet throughout. Dark chocolate, licorice, oak, and vanilla really stand out nicely. Medium body. A bit too much licorice but still pretty good. tectactoe (3125) - Michigan, USA - JUL 27, 2014
Tap: Black body with a mocha head; fine-bubbled & quick to reduce to a collar. Aroma of whiskey coated, sweet dates & prunes in a dark chocolate bath. Some cream, licorice, & heavier wood towards the back-end. Definitely a boozy beer, lots of barrel up-front on the palate with balancing notes of semisweet chocolate. Dark prunes, anise, mild vanilla, some sweet berry, & a bit of tannic wood in the finish. It’s not as well refined as some other barrel aged beers, but I enjoyed this nonetheless. flatmatt (1604) - Northville, Michigan, USA - JUL 27, 2014
On tap at MBGSF 2014. Pours black with a light tan head. Molasses and soy aromas. Flavors of roast cocoa and coffee, raisin, molasses, and some bourbon note. Very good, but not quite as good as the regular version.
