4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft at a Bell’s tasting at Harris Grill, Pittsburgh, PA.
Poured a lovely BLACK with tan head and ruby highlights. Aroma was a relative disappointment, probably too cold, but still came through with loads of smoke, cherries, blackberries and caramel.
Body followed with similar flavors without too much bourbon! I can’t say how much I appreciated the subtleties of the bourbon adding good caramel and smoke flavors.
Palate was fairly good, they also avoided the astringent viscosity that most in this style find, which I am most appreciative of.
Overall another winner from Bell’s!
On tap. Pours dark brown color with a small head aroma of dark fruit, caramel, vanilla, and good dash of bourbon. Taste of dark fruit, trace of vanilla, bit of spice, malt and bourbon. Mild bitterness and a clean finish. Medium body, smooth, nicely aged and crafted. Well done. very enjoyable. scarletfire65 (1534) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 8, 2017
Draft at First Draft in Chicago. An outstanding dubbel, maybe a dubbel - stout hybrid. Lots of fig, date, sherry, and oaky bourbon. Sweet boozy finish. ajnepple (7362) - Lakewood, Colorado, USA - JAN 15, 2017
On tap at El Bait Shop. Brown/black appearance with a tan head. Aroma of roasted grain, caramel malt, fruity esters, light vanilla and a hint of toasted oak. Similar flavor, rich, malty and lightly fruity with a bittersweet finish. The barrel aging aspect seems light, adding minor complexities. Maybe not a traditional Dubbel in the sense, but it’s top notch in that style category. Strykzone (7807) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - JAN 14, 2017
Draft at Elijah Ps. Its been some time since I had the original and really liked it. This looks like that one being dark brown and opaque. Bourbon dominates the aroma. I like when a really good beer is improved and the bourbon barrel aging does that. Vanilla, wood, and that regular Hell Hath that is so good. A winner of a beer. unclemike (3197) - Junction City Kansas, Kansas, USA - DEC 16, 2016
Pours a dark brown amber almost black color with a small off-white head. Has a strong malty bourbon and vanilla aroma. Has a sweetish malty caramel and dark fruit flavor with hints of vanilla and bourbon. Has a slightly sweetish malty spicy dark fruit finish with vanilla and bourbon in the aftertaste.

On tap at Champps in Brookfield for their anniversary party. Congrats Champps! Almost black pour. Solid barrel presence. Not a ton much else with this one, but that is fine. Little "dubbel-ish" presence. Really nice barrel, though. 14 Homer321 (5250) - Melboring, Florida, USA - DEC 11, 2016
Draft. Nose is moderately phenolic with a light bourbon aroma. Faint wood not much vanilla. Nearly black pour. Small khaki head. Taste is boizy to start with a light fig and raisin flavor. Light pepper but way less phenolic than aroma would indicate. Subtle warming. Not bad. Barrel and base beer seem good but not grate. crossovert (14146) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - NOV 26, 2016
Draft. Not a fan of this beer really on its own. But the barrel aging they did here reminds me of central waters. Tastes like elijah craig barrels for whatever reason. It is sweet and fruity but with a nice cinnamon vanilla overtone, good brew. rumproasts (6052) - Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA - NOV 25, 2016
Tap at gravity. Near black with small head. Fairly strong bourbon over a solid dubbel. Toffee and oak. Light vanilla. A bit boozy, but very tasty. RobertDale (6988) - Lansing, Kansas, USA - NOV 15, 2016
Sample at Strong Ale Fest 2016. Comes dark brown with an average sized tan head. Aroma of fruit, bourbon, and vanilla. Taste is dark fruit, bourbon, vanilla, caramel, and malt. Nice.
