SHIG (4964) - Wasilla, Alaska, USA - NOV 12, 2012
Bottle thanks to my mother-in-law: Poured a black color with very little bubbly head. Aroma was cherries and chocolate. Taste was all kinds of tart cherries with a dark chocolate hint, but mostly tart cherries.

Pours black with a medium brown head. The nose has mostly chocolate and cherry, though its a bit roasted and has mild coffee as well. The degree of tartness in here surprised me. The tartness is strong initially before tapering off and lingering on your palate. There is a heavy cherry flavor that is complimented by a chocolate base. Minor roasted hints, and thats about all as the cherry dominates from start to finish. Medium in body, creamy in texture, and just about flat in carbonation. This one is different than most stouts, but its solid.

Bottle. Black pour with a dark tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, dark fruits, cherry. Taste was surprisingly mild sweet, dark chocolate, sour cherry, plum. Nice.

UPDATED: OCT 22, 2017 Sweet cherry combined with a tartness that’s not overly pleasant. Wish this beer had a bit less richness, and a little more smoke.

To start this brew, it pours a very dark brown (almost black) body with a reddish-champagne head. It’s taste well balanced of cherry and malt, neither overwhelming the other and low on carbonation. The aroma is of roasted cherries.

GIJOE (1256) - North Berwick, Maine, USA - JUL 25, 2017
Pours black with a thin, creamy, tan head. Nose is roasted malts, cherry, and a hint of booze. Taste is well-balanced. Nicely bitter cocoa tones balance the malty sweetness and dodge the possibility of a sugar bomb reminiscent of a cherry cordials. Very nice brew.

No clue where this score will end up; Bell’s Cherry Stout seems to evolve as it warms, growing more complex and intriguing once you get past the initial blast of cherry tartness. Nice chocolate baseline upon which the cherries flourish, rich and semisweet, giving a solid foundation for the fruity soul of the pint. Never grows sweet, an appreciable touch considering the style’s cherry cordial potential, and a modest but noticeable bitterness firms up the finish. Nose should be better, but otherwise a good beer.

Bottle from a Meijers grocery in Holland, Michigan. Black with a tan head, a bit too bubbly to be perfect. Strong aroma of tart cherries and bitter chocolate. Flavour is tart and bitter, with cherries almost overwhelming the chocolate. Strong on the alcohol, it is quite easy to drink. Super nice, but perhaps I was expecting some stronger sweetness on the character overall.

Bottled. Pours pitch black with an off white head. Lots of cherry as it warms but there’s something smokey in the flavor I do not like.
