The basic inspiration for Bell’s Christmas Ale was to create a sessionable holiday beer, using locally grown malt, which would stand apart from the array of spiced winter warmers that are typically introduced this time of year. In contrast to many other seasonals, Christmas Ale doesn’t contain any spices: all of the dry, toasted notes & subtle toffee flavors come from the 100% Michigan-grown barley, custom malted by Briess Malting, while a blend of hops from Michigan & the Pacific Northwest lend earthy, herbal aromas. At 5.5% ABV, it stands as a smooth, highly drinkable beer intended to complement holiday menus, not overshadow them.

I can't really find anything about this beer to compain about....except for the price. For a lower ABV% beer, hard to believe this should sell for $11.00-$11.50 per six pack. I guess they are using some expensive ingredients! Still, I haven't found a Bell's yet that I don't like...or even one I would say is just average. This is a solid winter ale, as I prefer winter ales more like this style versus plain old spiced lagers. I had 3 of these to sample. Each one I noticed on the first sip, tasted just eh to me, but towards the end I am feeling it more. Nothing really special on this one, just works in a good way....but like I said, for the price I will probably look elsewhere in the future. Bell's brews other beers that I like better, for less money.

Pours a cloudy caramel. I didn’t get much of an aroma. One of the smoother Scotch Ales out there. Smooth going down but didn’t like the aftertaste on the palate. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Pours hazy chestnut, small tan head, dissipates fairly quickly, good lacing. Aroma is malty, toffee, nutty, rich, coffee notes. Flavor is medium sweet and light bitter. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel. This beer is getting no love, but I thought it was solid.

UPDATED: NOV 9, 2017 Nice aroma of rich toffee malt. Deep dark red color with a thick tan head. Very sweet up front. Complex toffe mixed with dark fruit tones. Bitterness is dry and earthy and balances sweetness. Slightly slick with a mild bitter finish. Nice change from typical Christmas brews.

Malt forward. Odd spicy notes. cloves? I didn't care for it because of the spices. Sorry, I had to upload these old ratings. They were for me, not for uploading. And also I need 75 characters, hence this sentence. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: AUG 7, 2017 It's maybe not as bad as it's been rated before. It's got great drinkability and it's a decent scotch Ale. The malts are nice and the Hops give a fun piney character to a Christmas beer. Overall though it just lacks complexity and a real incredible flavor. Utterly drinkable, but falls a little short.

Nothing Christmas stands out. Extremely misleading. In terms of a Scotch Ale, it works. Reviewed - A Brew With You, Ep. 63

Helles leicht trübes braun schöner schaum, im Geruch viel Getreide malzig süß würzig, im Geschmack würzig malzig süsslich aber auch herb saurer Abgang , ok aber nichts so tolles

12oz Flasche. Hellbraunes Bier mit flüchtigem Schaum. Laut Edikett ein Scottish Ale. Es riecht nach geschrotetem Korn. Antrunk Körner und Malz. Recht schlicht.

DocJitsu (2115) - Pensacola, Florida, USA - MAY 6, 2017
Pours a copper color with a very light khaki head. Caramel and toffee nose with a hop note or two. Heavy mouthfeel. Rich caramel flavor. Finishes with a bit of hoppiness.
