   AROMA 7/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 8/10   PALATE 4/5   OVERALL 17/20

Pours a dark amber with a slightly beige head. The head is rather thin, but a fair amount of lacing remains for the duration. Aroma is of caramel malts and toffee, rather sweet and distinctive. Upon first taste I was immediately hit by a strong alcohol flavor akin to bourbon, as well as a buttery toffee taste. As it settled down, the maltiness in the aroma reasserted itself. But here’s where it gets interesting: As the beer continued to warm, I also detected a hint of wood smoke and salt in the flavor--just a touch. This is a doppelbock to be sure, but for me, there was just a hint of a rauchbier profile. In the end, I have to say that the taste really was sweet and salty. Mouthfeel was watery, but the carbonation was stronger and sharper than usual for this style. In sum: A beer that holds it’s own with the best German variants of the style. Definitely worthy a try.

lovely brew. You really must taste this beer to enjoy it. Complex notes of sweetness mix with the malty finish. Not overly hoppy, just right for me.

Dark cider/copper color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of toasted sweet malt, caramel/molasses, & spice; Flavor of sweet malt, caramel/toffee, fruit, and some spice; Warm smooth finish; Nicely balanced; Pretty easy drinking - good.

oobawa (1926) - Tennessee, USA - OCT 17, 2017
Big malty beast, full of caramel and toffee with underlying dark fruit notes of fig and candied date, mild red delicious esters popping up towards the back end to balance out the slightest bit of floral hop bitterness. Pretty good as far as American doppelbocks go, yet on the sweet side, lacking the German minerality that offsets the sugars of traditional brews. Caramel-slathered toast for the aroma, but the pour's a bit lifeless, coming out a reddish brown with a brief off-white head and no lace. Feel comes across a tad slack and watery, yet the alcohol's well-hidden, at least. Decent.
