COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
One of the earliest examples of the Russian Imperial Stout in the United States, Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with vintage aging in mind, as its profile will continue to mature and develop over the years. A huge malt body is matched to a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruits, and other aromas. Intensely bitter in its early months, the flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages.
Available October-March.

This has been on my shelf for about 8 years. So must date from about 2008. Well aged as suggested. I was considering this for rating number 5000 only 30 more away. But it called my name now and so here goes. Pours jet black with a tan head. The nose here is powerful, and is chocolate, coffee, dark ripe fruit and licorice. Very full in body with consistence of well used motor oil and a rich and creamy mouth feel with just a touch of the alcohol showing. The flavor is dark rich roasted matts with chocolate and coffee, the really dark ripe fruit and the licorice still is there. Very complex flavors and really balanced. The finish is chocolate bitter and very strong I do not know how much aging helped this beer but I am pretty sure it did not hurt it. So smooth, so tasty, and so enjoyable As good as it gets

ciocanelu (1588) - Timisoara, ROMANIA - NOV 25, 2016
Black color with mocha head. Aroma is quite complex with coffee, chocolate, a bit of liquorice, even a slight dark fruit note. Taste starts with some dark, roasted malt acidity, coffee, chocolate and a hint of liquorice. Medium to heavy body with smooth mouthfeel. Overall it’s a really well made imperial stout, one of the best non barrel aged examples.

Black color with medium creamy brown head that fades in a while. Aroma of bitter chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, alcohol, cognac, dark fruits. Taste: the same as aroma, sweet with very nice depth. Creamy texture, full body, soft carbonation and a excellent bittersweet aftertaste. An absolute world class!

330ml bottle. Smell is amazing - rich vanilla and cacao with lots of fresh coffee scents. Pours thick and oily, black with some light brown head. Taste is coffee bitterness with some delicate sour hints I did not enjoy that much. Very oily and thick, that is the palate I like in my imperial stouts... Overall those sour notes were the only thing that did not fit there in my opinion.

Wickedly complex and densely weaved. Very dry. Long bitter aftertaste. Potent. Still very tannic. Needs time.
