I don’t know about retirement for this beer, as it seems to make appearances here and there. Such as at a small stout festival in Covington, KY, on tap.
Appearance: Your standard stout, a dark brown verging on black, with a decent tan head.
Smell: Here’s where things start to get interesting. It’s a stout, and so one would expect roasty malt, coffee, perhaps some chocolate - and nope. Pure spice wafts out of the glass, a wave of ginger, cinnamon, and clove, with some faint herbal undertones. Somewhere under that, like supporting arches beneath a bridge, hang subtle odors of roasted malt and lightly roasted coffee.
Taste: This stout drinks in layers, opening with a rush of pure ginger wreathed in smoke, before blackstrap sweetness begins to filter in. The molasses brings cinnamon and ground clove flavors along with it, swirling about before yielding in turn to a light coffee, mixed with brown sugar and nutmeg. Spice is prominent in every phase, including a lingering ginger-cinnamon taste after the swallow.
Mouthfeel: Closer to medium-bodied than full, this is oddly refreshing for a stout.
Overall: A curiosity I would repeat, given the chance. Well done, Bell’s. alliance100 (1152) - Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA - MAR 2, 2015

Draught @ Ginger Man. Deep brown with small foamy tan head, coffee aroma, low carbonation, ginger flavored coffee taste, thin body, longish finish with coffee aftertaste.

Aroma of smokey roasted malt and a molasses like coffee as well. Taste is the same with a bit of a spiciness to the finish. Lots of flavor, some odd, but nothing bad about this beer. Just some odd flavors and not sure they all go together, so can't bump the rating up. Makes me think smokey Porter with spicy finish if that is your thing.

Draft - Ginger, clove and roast. Jet black with a light brown head. Tons of ginger with a bit of toasted malts. Ginger overwhelms but if you like ginger it is pretty nice. JStax (6505) - Devola/Marietta, Ohio, USA - JAN 1, 2015
Draft pour at the source. Pours a darker brown to black with a beige head of foam. The arom has dry, herbal, earthy spice. Mild roast. Taste is strong on the spice and light on roast. Decent, but I think the ginger is more of a distraction than anything else. Medium body and medium carbonation. swoopjones (7020) - Buffalo, New York, USA - DEC 21, 2014

Sampler at brewpub. Pours black with a khaki head. I love how they put Harry Magill’s name in real small type on the sign. Not a lot on the nose. Solid molasses and brown sugar notes on the tongue. Not sure I’m getting a lot of coffee notes. Finished clean. Solid.
