Drinking notes from GTM 05: good but not damn good. Others seem to be enjoying this (they must be drunk). Has a strong roasted flavor.
at GTMW 2005. Don’t remember much since I didn’t enter these immediately after the event. Know it was strange for a barleywine and was much darker, and chocolatier. Had it towards the end of the day, too, which means my palate was toast. Mangino (1027) - Mississippi, USA - OCT 4, 2005
Tap @ Great taste of the Midwest- Pours a dark brown. Small light brown head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, lots of roast. The Flavor is more chocolate coffee, nuts. Strange barleywine. ElGaucho (2401) - Minnetonka, Minnesota, USA - AUG 24, 2005
GTM. Rich, strong aroma with molasses and roasted malt. No head, very dark brown, opaque body. Really nice flavor. Wow factor. Sweet, bubblegum flavor. Very unique; has hops. One of the best barleywines I’ve had. DavidP (1747) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - AUG 21, 2005
’05 GTMW sample. Dark fruited aroma. Big chocolate flavor. Green hops, tart finish. Sort of a dull barleywine.

Sampled at the Great Taste of the Midwest 2005. Poured with a dark brown murky body. The aroma is catalope with some chocolate. The taste is bread, caramel and toast. Finishes with a nice roasted character. Interesting barley wine. Philip (436) - Illinois, USA - AUG 15, 2005
On tap at the Great Taste of the Midwest, Madison, 8/13/2005. I wasn’t planning on rating this one given I wrote "chocolate?" in my notes, but it appears that a few others picked this up as well. Its a strange barleywine indeed. Flavors of toasty oak with the cocoa come across on the palate. Its an interesting creature. Larry Bell stated this was not Batch7000, which he says stiill needs some time to settle down before it can be bottled. Tap @ GTMW. Very hazy brown with some lightening at the corners and no head. Sweet roasty aroma with maraschino cherries, plastic and Fabreeze. Wonderful first palate hit. Creamy and inundating. Some chocolate roastyness and noticeable ABV. Tingly and impeccably balanced. Cocoa powder lingers. Delicious, but a barleywine? 1FastSTi (3358) - Glendale, Wisconsin, USA - AUG 14, 2005
On tap at GTMW. The beer has a light wood aroma. It pours to a dark brown body with a thin tan head. I got sour malts and chocolate in the aroma. The flavor is chocolate and roasted malts. I too would say its not a barleywine... hezron (614) - Viroqua, Wisconsin, USA - AUG 14, 2005
On tap at GTMW. Chocolaty aroma! Very weird for a barleywine. Dark, dark black with a thin, light brown head. Looks like a stout. I double checked with them and yes, they are calling it a barleywine. Flavor is chocolaty with a quick hoppy bitterness fading to an overly sweet toasted chocolate and coffee finish. Medium body, slightly creamy texture. This was a decent stout...
