As the final & boldest in the series, Le Contrebassiste blends roasted & lightly smoked malts and is fermented with a special French ale yeast which lends its own distinctive aromatic notes. The beer’s namesake, The Double Bass is reflected in the deep, rich flavors that resonate in this unique offering.

4 oz. sample at El Bait Shop, De Monies, Iowa. Aroma is sour funky oak, smoke and vinegar. I despise drinking vinegar in a sour, this is almost exclusively vinegar. Palate is extremely sharp with a mild dirty ashtray finish. I hope Bell’s never brews this again. And if they do, they better have a separate area to brew this. I would hate for other areas of the brewery to become infected from this garbage. Never again.

Sampled at MWBBF. Darker and murky. A nice beer that was interesting and somewhat complex. Earthy, vinous on occasion, a little funk. Complex fruit and yeast. I like it.

Sample @ Charleston Brewvival 2015. Amber pour with a small head. Nose is a bit funky. Some woody. Fig and strawberry. Leather. Yeasty. Similar flavor. Sweet and a bit wild. Toffee and dark fruits. Earth. Light lemon zest. Medium body, active carb. Interesting stuff. All over the place, but still tasty.

_angst_ (5008) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - DEC 9, 2015
Draught @ CBC 2015. Pours tiny hazy golden with a small offwhite head that leaves some small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is slightly malty and slightly funky with bread, caramel, lemon juice, hay, dry soil, leather, barnyard and lemon zest. Taste is sweet, sour, malty and slightly funky. Mouthfeel is round, tart, tiny dry and medium bodied. Finish is sweet and sour with buttered dark bread, caramel, biscuits, lemon juice, grapes, hay, dry soil, leather, banryard and lemon zest. Decent but a bit too buttery.
