Classified as a sweet stout and I generally like sweet stouts, however, I have been very let down with other highly rated Bell beers so I have some aprehension. Once I cracked the lid I didnít notice any outstanding aroma. 12 oz brown bottle pours thick and dark but not as thick and dark as Mackesons xxx. First taste is not initially bitter, pretty smooth actually. Does have some hop or malt hints. Not real bitter like other Bell stouts and is very acceptable. Could have a bit more carbonation, but I think this level of carbonation is proper for a sweet stout. Finish is OK with a hint of lingering malty bitterness something like a Moretti La Rossa. Just perhaps, this is a bit smoother than Sammy Adams Cream stout.

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2007 Bottle. Pours black with decent size tannish head. Nice lacing, very nice looking beer. Taste is medium bodied, touch of roast, faint chocolate sweetness, though very muted. Actually was perfect amount of sweetness for me.

Bottle. Sweet lactose aroma gives way to gentle chocolate notes and a vague fruitiness. Exceptionally malty. Very, very light coffee. Pours a nearly-opaque pitch red/brown with a light brown head. Roast comes out much more strongly in the taste, but itís balanced by elevated creaminess. Lotsa malt! Beautifully smooth chocolate. Balanced attack of light sweetness and light bitterness with a splash of stout sourness in the bg. End and aftertaste are dry and mildly bitter, gritty roast calmed by smooth creaminess. Medium-full body with a playful mf. Restrained and respectful despite the abundance of flavor. Very rounded and interesting - Bellís does stouts like no other.

Black and thick. Lots of roasted malt flavor, but no hops. Medium sweetness was less than I expected.

Stine (1771) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - NOV 5, 2006
UPDATED: SEP 9, 2007 Pours to opaque black. Nose of mocha, caramel, mollasses and brown sugar cake, or toffee. Combines the rich sweetness of chocolate and port with a faint dryness like tobacco and charcoal. Satisfyingly full-bodied. The exemplar accompaniment to dessert.

UPDATED: DEC 7, 2006 12 oz bottle from Ohiodad(thanks!).Pours near black with a very small head. Mocha and vanilla in the nose. Flavor is vanilla, mocha, toffee and a little alcohol is present in the finish. Medium bodied, silky mouthfeel and easy to drink. Very nice beer.**************12/2/06 re-rate but i am not changing the scores...only the comments-Thanks to whoever sent me this. Pours almost pitch black with a small tan head. Nose is roasty with some espresso and a little band aid. Taste is very very roasty, coffee, chocolate, licorice, anise, lactose, and the dreaded band aid. Likely i have a bottle past itís prime. Still decent but i imagine it was much better before the band aid took hold. Medium bodied, high carbonation. The first sub-par Bells beer i think i have had.

Dark. blackish color with cream head. Smooth, roasted malt aroma that is very appetizing. Taste has nice hop bitterness with roasted malts and a very creamy ending. Very good mouthfeel. Like a Kalamazoo Stout with half and half. The only downside is that the creamy taste takes away from an otherwise fantastic stout. Another good Bells stout, and another good Bellís Beer!!!

12 oz bottle. Ebony with a brief crema head. Coffee, chocolate milkshake, faint school chalk. Taste follows a similar line with sour apricot in the finish. Give this one a brisk pour and it becomes just like an ice cream soda. What Guiness nitro hopes it tasted like. Good gateway stout for initiates.

Pours an almost black color. Very nice looking in the glass. Very little head. Aroma is bittersweet bakers chocolate with roast and caramel following. This beer goes down so nice. Very velvety and smooth. Flavor is dominated by sweet roast and caramel. Very little bitterness and no alcohol present. I really enjoy this beer.

Pours a black color with a thin brown head. Aroma is sweet with chocolate, coffee, molasses, roasted malts, and some alcohol. Flavor basically the same with a slightly bitter finish. More subtle then their other stouts but still very delicious.
