5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
It pours out clean and clear (if poured carefully) with an agressive and sticky bone head. Color is reminiscent of a sunset or the flesh of a peach. The lacing sticks all the way down.
Oh, the nose on this beer. Itís home-made shortcake, glazed with citrusey pulp, vanilla and orchid petals. Hoppy to the extreme but showing a wonderfully sweet malt base.
Itís full, but not fat or bloated in the mouth. Perfectly carbonated, keeping it light, but not thin... just right. When it hits your tounge, itís citrus bitter, rolling directly into sweet shortbread and vanilla malts. Plenty of fruit character shows, with some apricot and other fleshy stone fruits. The hop flavor doesnít back off though, itís there, and very strong, a lucious mix of citrus fruits, grapefruit, satsumas (mmmm) and the lovely spring like flavor of flower petals. All of this is rolled up into an ellegant dance of malt and hops... perfection. Seriously.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Tap at The Good Beer Store. Very appealing cloudy light orange color. Intense aromas of sweet fresh fruits: pineapple, banana, limeade, along with a bit of yeast and a definite hops presence. The taste is quite an experience: fruity, sweet hops balanced with a yeasty, bready backbone. BItterness is perfectly controlled. There is plenty of body with carefully concealed alcohol. I had tried this some time ago in bottle and was not very impressed, but after trying it on tap this has become one of my favorite IPAs!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pour is deep gold, not as dark as I usually think of from an IPA. Lots of soft white foam that sticks around absolutely forever. Some nice pine and citrus hops in the aroma.
Yum. Good tasting beer. Solidly built, with ample hoping, but not so much as most good American IPAs. Very clean and refreshing, the first sips begs a second. The first glass begs a second.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: MAY 27, 2009 Bellsí Two Hearted Ale is my 100th rating. Wow, I finally made it. Bells is a good IPA, a very good IPA. The aroma is citrus and floral, while the beer is very sharp and bitter with the same notes. Just a very good, well made IPA. Nothing over the top, but good.
---Update---- 9070 Consumed May 5th.
Wow. So much more orange and dank. Lots of bright hop flavors mixing with the crisp biscuit malt to create an absolutely stunning experience.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: MAR 10, 2007 On cask (yes, cask) at the Happy Gnome in St. Paul, MN. The aroma is strongly citrus-hoppy, and that is great for a hops lover like me. Pours a clear amber with virtually no head. The flavor is very pleasantly hoppy. There are slight fresh apple notes. The hops overwhelm the other flavors. Overall, I would characterize the taste as subdued, which is a strange thing to say about a hops-oriented legend like Two Hearted. The beer is very smooth and undercarbonated, producing a dull effect in the palate, likely an effect of the cask. This dull texture is a poor complement to the sharp hops. I definitely prefer the traditional non-cask version. I had Two Hearted a few weeks ago on non-cask tap. I didnít rate it formally, but I figured at the time that it would have earned about a 4.
<P>Re-rate, 2-18-07: I tried Two Hearted again last night, this time in an approximately 4 oz. sample poured from a 12 oz. bottle at an American IPA tasting hosted by tennisjoel. It was the sixth of ten that we tried. Of the five of those ten that I had previously rated, this is the only one that I am re-rating, as it is the only one whose rating would have changed substantially. Clean-smelling, hoppy aroma features citrus (lemon, grapefruit) and pine. Pours a clear golden amber with a moderate amount of white head and good legs. Flavor of candy lemon sour hops; extremely citrusy. Like a hoppy limoncello, and I mean that as a compliment. Sharp and lively in the palate (a welcome upgrade from the dull cask experience); medium body. This is just a very good beer. Two Hearted is not quite as good as the wonderful HopSlam, but it does show a strong family resemblance. It came in second place on my ballot among the ten in the IPA tasting (to Surly Furious).

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
A strong cascade nose with a dark, golden color. A little strong in the hop-bitterness, but an excellent beer for those who love hops.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Orange, rust colored pour. Nice thick white head. Aroma of hops, citrus, flowers and some faint pine, with even a hint of malt. Great hoppy-citrus taste with a bitter finish.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
A grapefruity aroma with a touch of evergreen. An orangish pour with the prominate guey lacing. A jump out there hops flavor with a very nice bitter. A malt bill that levels this beer out to a very smooth flavor. Just a slightly thin palate and o so fizzy carbonation that kept this beer from being even better. A thin palate is the only thing that keeps this from being soo much better. Still a damn fine beer.
