India Pale Ale style well suited for Hemingway-esque trips to the Upper Peninsula. American malts and enormous hop additions give this beer a crisp finish and incredible floral hop aroma.

The first time I had this I was unexcited. Perhaps it was the unappealing packaging. On tap, I had an epiphany. This is a great beer! Intensely hoppy but not overpowering by any means. Floral hops are there for flavor, not for hopís sake. Full, yet refreshing. Very complex, yet balanced for its style. Absolutely a "go to" beer. An IPA by which to judge others.

Pours a golden yellow with a white head about a cm in thickness. Aroma has a mix of citrus fruits, hops, and sweet malts. Taste was a mix of citrus "juice", alcohol, and hops. However, the taste wasnít that strong, a bit watery. Thickness was good, not too much excess carbonation. For a 7%, isnít too strong, could drink anytime.

Citrus grapefruit aroma. Appearance is golden with a nice head. Taste is citrus grassy hops with a pleasant copper taste. Palate is nice and carbonated with a resinous taste to it. Overall I am sad I canít get this in Colorado.

Given that this beer hails from Michigan, obviously takes itís name from the famous Hemingway short story Big Two Hearted River about a man returning from World War I who is working through his personal wartime trauma on a camping and fishing trip in the Wolverine state. Exept this being Hemingway, everything is so plainly laid out none of this obvious at first. The story slowly unfolds and the truth is somewhere between the lines. Which makes this beer a lot like Hemingwayís proseóitís incredibly crisp, greater than the sum of its parts, and very compelling.

Smooth well balanced ipa. Fruity and floral hop aroma, taste is fruity and spicy and awesome well balanced by malt. This is incredibly easy to drink, finishes clean and lovely and asks that you drink more. yum.

Bottle from an American friend. Instant attack of hops on the nose from the moment of opening. Beautiful straw color with persistent light white head. Intensely bitter without tons of caramel sweetness on the back like some IPAs get. This is a quintessential American craft IPA. Canít go wrong with this if looking for the style. Does not taste of its abv, another indication of balance. Aromas of pine, dank pineapple and light citrus.

Pours a golden amber with thick, white head. Wonderful floral aroma with hints of citrus and pine. Great balance between spicy hops and sweet, malty backbone. Dare I say that this ale is the quintessential American IPA? It's certainly my favorite! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

bottle: straight poured into a tulip glass, creating a large white frothy head. light gold (i like gold) cloudy from a good amount of sediment floating in the glass. Smells of a mellow hop, floral, citrusy aroma. There is no incredible hop explosion from this ipa..Fairly carbonated ale, with somewhat of a thin to moderate mouth feel, and a fruity aftertaste. well balanced, but I think i was biased in thinking that it would be bombastic..chill

UPDATED: DEC 21, 2007 I forgot how good this really was. The aroma is so fresh and hoppy with floral in the bakground. Huge frothy head. Lacing stays around for the experience. Taste is refreshing with the hops coming through evenly. Canít wait to have this one on the first snow day in northern Indiana.
