A mahogany coloured Belgian farmhouse ale. Fresh aroma of berries and spice, flavours of biscuit, caramel & nuts, and a characteristic sharp dry finish.

650ml bottle from the brewery in Toronto, Ontario. Deep amber in colour with a long lasting small tan coloured head, good lacing. The aroma is of plums, dark fruits, sweet caramel malts, some bread. The flavour is fairly sweet, dark malts, plums and spice. Sweet mouthfeel, medium body, moderate carbonation. Finishes long, sweet, dry. I really like this one. Possibly more of a Dubbel then a Saison but I can’t complain. Really good.

In short: A nutty and spicy Belgian brown ale of some kind. Awkward. Meh.
How: Bottle 650ml, consumed with some months of age, bottle sent to me by blankboy, thanks a lot Paul.
The look: Cloudy light brown body topped by a medium beige head.
In long: Nose is spicy, tree bark, roasted nuts, fruity yeast esters, also dried fruits. In mouth the beer fills thick in a muddy way with generous carbonation. Taste is very nutty (hazelnuts, cashews, more…), some caramel, a medium spiciness that is somewhere between star anise and nutmeg, note of red berries. There is a good attenuation so I guess there is a Saison yeast at work somewhere in there, but this beer is certainly not what I’ve come to expect from a Saison. I like dry Saisons, the dryer the better, but strangely I found the attenuation of this beer awkward considering its overall flavour spectrum. Not too sure what Bellwoods was attempting here, just not a fun beer, a bunch of flavors, no harmony. A rare fail from Bellwoods. Not at all what I was expecting, and I hate when I open a bottle of beer and then when I pour it I suddenly realize that my father never loved me.

Bottle (650 ml). Thanks to John! Hazy brown with a medium beige head. No lacing. Aroma of berries, cherries, caramel, spices... interesting but not really what I expect from a Saison. Taste is moderately sweet and slightly acidic with caramel, berries, spices and a medium herbal bitterness finish. Medium body. In my opinion, this beer isn’t right on style, but it still interesting and drinkable (even if little heavy). It worth a try.

Medium brown color. Peppery, cherries, estery, mandarin oranges and a bit of sponge cake in the nose. Slightly tart, earthy character with a fair amount of hoppiness. Very well balanced, Slight to moderately bitterness with cherries and wood character. Great depth, great balance. Fantastic.

Light brown amber. Nutty, caramel malts, tobacco, pumpernickel or some sort of bread. Rye? Pretty bitter. Decent saison

November 20, 2012 - on draught at the brewpub. Lovely - hazy rosy gold, average rocky beige head. Smells like a simple sweet dubbel - yeast, caramel, spice, some alcohol - not very estery. Taste follows, but a welcome addition of dry herbal bitterness, maybe a hint of cocoa - still a little fruity, more apple than banana. Thick, chewy, airy but not fizzy - sweet and malty, quick-finishing, a little mineral in the aftertaste - a solid beer.

On tap at Volo. Pours an orangey brown with modest tan head. Aroma is caramel, fruity esters and wheat. Flavour likewise with lots of sweet caramel and fruit. Fine carbonation. Nice.

[4962-20121120] Tap. Odd vegetal leaf grains aroma. Hazy, bright red body with a long-lasting foamy off-white head. Bitter lemongrass flavour has a bit of a fruity note. Medium body has a dry finish. Interesting Belgian yeast but is a little dry for me. (7/3+/7/3/15) 3.5
