This brown ale poured a slightly cloudy, deep amber colour with a minimal , tan coloured head. Scents include ripe fruit, grassy hops, hay and leaves. First swig was quite hoppy off the start but tapers quickly. Flavours of spruce hops and ripe fruit, along with roasted malts. Finish was hoppy and had a medium bitterness lingering.
September 20, 2013 - at Bar Hop - on draught. Clear reddish-brown, deep and refractive, with a lovely lasting tan creamy head. Nutty, dry, lightly herbal aroma - not much alcohol. Taste has tons of bitterness dried grass and resin - also nutty/roasty, dry, not much alcohol. Average body, chewy and astringent, light carbonation, fairly long reasonably bitter dry finish with some emerging chocolate; I sure wish more brown ales were like this. radiomgb (2686) - Peterborough, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 21, 2016
650ml bottle. Rich brown/mahogany in colour with a thin tan head, light lacing. The aroma is of chocolate, light pine hops, caramel, roasted nuts. The flavour is lightly hopped, good malt sweetness, nutty and toasty. Lightly bitter mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation. Finishes long, hoppy. Whenever I have a brown ale I always go into them thinking that they will bore me. This was one of the few that didn’t. An excellent brown ale, lots of hop bitterness. Bottle, sent to me by Robbie-- thanks buddy! Dark brown, tan head. Nice roasty profile with a kiss of citrus hop character. Full bodied, a nice hoppy brown. Whatup14 (2224) - Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, CANADA - MAY 17, 2015

Pours hazy brown with a fat finger of loose rocky tan head diminishing gradually to a thin skim, patchy lacing. (4/5) Nose is roasty malts, coffee, dark fruit, light citrus, toffee malt, mild smoke. (8/10) Taste is mild sweet, moderate bitter. (8/10) Medium body, moderate carbonation, long roasty and slightly smoky finish. (4/5)
What an interesting beer - it looks like a porter, tastes like a black IPA, smells like something in between. Hoppy and malty in balance, and much more interesting than your normal brown ale, but still largely within the definitions of the style if you’re a little flexible in your interpretation of the “Northern English Brown” variant. That said, it’s definitely much hoppier than typical examples of the style like Newcastle Brown or Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown. (16/20) TheJester (2543) - Cavan Monaghan, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 15, 2015
500 mL bottle at the Ashburnham Ale House. Looks like a porter. Smells and tastes like a Black IPA. Which leans to the malty side. A little. Not that that’s a bad thing. samzim (440) - Ontario, CANADA - JAN 17, 2015
Malty and boozy aroma. Opaque brown dark brown colour. Flavour of toffee, roasted chestnut, and dark cereal. Medium body with mild carbonation. Quite tasty. Boutip (6628) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - JAN 9, 2015
Bottle: Poured a medium brown color ale with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of caramelized malt with light citrus notes is quite pleasant. Taste is also dominated by caramelized malt with light citrus notes. Light nutty notes are also discernable. Body is light with good carbonation. Good drinkability with just the right amount of complexity. Nicely done for the style. thorongil2 (3570) - , Ontario, CANADA - DEC 4, 2014
