The Russian Imperial Stout is a very strong variant of the stout originally developed by English brewers in the 18th century to export to the court of Catherine the Great in Russia. This extremely dark and complex beer has intense aromas and flavours of malt, burnt chocolate, dark fruit, fresh earth and vanilla. A portion will be aged and released next year.

Yeast: American Ale

Deep black pour. A thick brown head. The aroma is quite rich and coffeeish. A touch of berry fruit along with some intense pepper and roast. A little bit of savoury sort of black licorice and light spice. More like carafa special than roasted character (dark but not ashy) with a fairly savoury component to it. Sticky and intense without being overly cloying or sweet. Very herbaceous flavour. Despite all of the things I like about it, it leaves me kind of wishing for some more sweetness and chocolate character. It leans toward the savoury/salty side of impys more than sweet and chocolatey. Personal preferences aside, its a very well-constructed brew. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark chocolate, roasted malt, licorice, molasses, hint of smoked bacon. Thick/oily mouth feel, smooth carbonation. Nicely balanced bitter/sweet, coffee, molasses, medium dry. Beautifully balanced with well integrated alcohol - does not feel like a 10% beer! (bottled Jan 2016)

Bottle (500 ml). Pitch black with a medium brown head, good retention, leaving some lacing. Aroma is of roasted malts, ashes, fudge, vanilla, coffee and hints of liquorice. Taste is semi-sweet with fudge, roasted malt, coffee, smokey notes, vanilla, liquorice and red fruits. Medium body. Medium carbonation. Semi-sweet fudgey finish. Good RIS. Maybe a tad smokey but otherwise pretty interesting and not overdone.

Oily black, completely black with a 3 finger tan head. fades to a thin 1 finger crema-like head. Licorice, bakers chocolate, fudge hints and old dark roasted coffee beans. Holy bitter / smokey. this one is intense. You get ashy tobacco tootsie roll, cocoa, shoe polish and the finish is a piney barley flavor. Very intense.

Bottle from the brewery. Opaque dark brown with a two finger lingering dark khaki head. Nose is chocolate, molasses, coffee, plum, candied fruit and light vanilla. Light sweet malt supports a medium bitter chocolate and coffee. Mouth is full and creamy with soft carbonation and a lingering finish where the alcohol just manages to make itself known. Excellent. 9-/5-/8/4+/16+

500ml bottle from the brewery bought by brother, thanks Guillaume. Aroma: good mix of chocolate, roasted malt and vanilla. Also some dark red fruits as it warms up. App: really dark brown, medium brown frothy head and beautiful lacing covering almost all the glass. Taste and palate: full body, creamy, smooth, medium sweetness, even more chocolate in mouth, moderate bitter finish. Overall: pretty good. Could be a bit less bitter but overall this is a success to me. I needed something like this after my bad day yesterday. Rating might be biased because of this but I dont care, this is good and what I needed today.

Merci Guillaume pour le partage! Vintage 2014.

Bottle. Black pour, big brown head. Thick, full bodied, burnt flavours, slightly smoky, bitter, strong but very smooth. No alcohol, slight mineral flavour. Killer stout.

2013 version drank early 2016. Pours out like engine oil. Pitch black dark, tons of dark fruit, roasted malt, molasses and cacao in the nose. Tons of dark fruit, molasses, roasted malts, medium dry body, alcohol is well hidden. Low carbonation. Nice lingering malt and cacao finish. Excellent example of an imperial stout. Another winner from Bellwoods.

750ml bottle from the brewery in Toronto, Ontario at one of the first bottle sale days. Deep black in colour with a thin but long lasting tan head, excellent lacing. The aroma is of chocolate, lots of roasted malts, light coffee. The flavour is heavy on the chocolate, lots of roasted malts, vanilla, dark fruits. Warming bitter mouthfeel, large body, moderate carbonation. Finishes very long, roasty and warming. A very big Imperial Stout. This is so good. Incredible balance, high drinkability. Very well done.
