COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
wild ale w/ passion fruit blend of 1 and 2 year barrels Motley Cru is our anniversary release, with the only requirement being that the final beer must incorporate a blend of various barrels. This year's edition is a wild ale with passion fruit blended from two mixed grain ales (containing pale ale barley malt, wheat, oats, and rye). Both new American oak barrels, and old use (wild ale program) barrels from Niagara and Prince Edward County provide an eclectic range of wild and local yeast strains, and several hundred kilos of passion fruit puree create a fantastic balance of old world sour flavours and bright tropical notes. Extra time spent conditioning in the bottle provides a lively carbonation. What is smells and tastes like: A crisp acidity, healthy oak backbone, bursting passion fruit aroma, and plenty of wild ale funk. A crazy balance of fuzzy peach, five alive, bell pepper, and cracked pepper.

(500ml bottle @ the brewpub, Jan 13/18) Pours moderately hazed dark gold with a white head and spotty lace. Notes of sweet-tart passionfruit, grapefruit, white wine, lactic juiciness, bare hint acetic, straw, some wet funk more prominent on the nose, soft minerality, oak is quite light though slightly more prominent on the finish. Overall, it hits with a big biting sour juicy core initially, the passionfruit really feeding into that but the bracing nature is actually quite pleasant. As the tongue adapts, it reveals less complexity than I might have hoped for but remains full of flavour. Finish is moderate to high tart, drying oak, floral passionfruit, touches of hay and funk. Medium bodied and oily with soft effervescent carbonation. Nice stuff, drinkable in the extreme despite the acidity, with pleasing fruit extraction.

Bottled. Clear golden body, almost no head. The aroma is strong of flowers, berry and some oak. The taste is sour and refreshing. Wonderful flowery at the end. When adding yeast sediment it gets sweeter and has a bolder flavor.

[9896-20171217] 500mL bottle. Fruity sour peach apricot passionfruit aroma. Slightly hazy, light gold orange body with a quick foamy white head. Super sour fruity apricot flavour has a long sour finish. Medium body is very, very sour. Delicious. (9/3/9/5/16) 4.2

2017-12-18. Crisp yellow body, modest white head. 3+ Aroma is interesting, tangy fruit, something I can't quite place. Flavour is quite tart, fruity, passion-fruit and berry notes. 7+ Average bodied palate, good carbonation. 3+ Pretty tasty. Arguably not as much depth as some previous Motley Cru vintages but perhaps more quaffable than some as well. 7/3/7-8/3/16+ Bottle from Bellwoods, Toronto.

Bottle - Funk and light rubber with some tropical notes. Clear pale gold with a decent white. Soured apricot and stone fruit. Dry finish and nice acidity.

Gold pour, fairly hazy, thumb-sized white head that fizzes out into a small ring. Big passionfruit in the aroma, sour, tart stonefruit. Tart up front, loads of passionfruit, light citrus, apricot, vinous. Bold flavour without killing the palate - not always easy to do.

Without a doubt the most intense beer from the Motley Cru series so far. The acidity (which is amplified by the passionfruits and lemony notes) is borderline too much for drinkability but the intense funk give this beer a nice layer of complexity.

A 750ml bottle at the brewery, 2017 vintage, poured into a Bellwoods stemmed wine glass. It was a mostly clear golden straw colour with a thin white head that dissipated fairly quickly and left only sparse lacing. Aroma was sourish and tropical, passionfruit, apricot and pineapple. Taste was tart, sour, passionfruit and apricot with hints of lemon. Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall it was light, refreshing and easy to drink.
