cask days 2011, less than intense roasted malt aroma, some c itrusy hop bitterness. Flavor was solid, not too roasty nor to bitter, a nice balance between the two. Pretty good HogTownHarry (6622) - Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, CANADA - JUL 20, 2011
Cask - Volo Cask Days 2010, Day 1 (session 2). With Stephen G ragging me non-stop in the background, I rate on. 60 IBUs. Mostly opaque ruby, clear around the edges, with an average frothy light brown head. Smells like a nice (non-syrupy) brown ale with a tad more than usual alcohol and oddly some salty tuna (???) and a hint of oak - some, but not much herbal bitterness. Taste is still quite malty and roasty, but in addition to the herbal bitterness, there is building low-level citrus zest bitterness as well - interesting, not entirely sure it’s a complete success. Slick, astringent, weakly carbonated, eventually develops near-IPA level hoppy bitterness, but still very roasty ..... I am still not sold on the "black IPA" concept. In short: A intensely hopped (American resinous hops) creamy stout. Could pass as a Black IPA. Very tasty and very very good.tom10101 (6030) - Quebec, CANADA - APR 21, 2012
How: Tap at brewpub. Freshly put on tap, first batch ever.
The look: Black body with a very small tan head
In long: Intriguing nose, roasted, fruity, rubbery, and a lot more. Taste is… well… tasty. Full body, lots of small bubbles, creamy and smooth mouthfeel even if a little sticky. Medium roasted level with distant black chocolate. So far it would be just an ok Stout. But man the hopping is just crazy in this one. Intensely hopped, very resinous with citrus fruits and pine-needles flavour. Distant reminder of Stone 11th anniversary. Wow in a in a matter of a few weeks Quebec got its two first Black IPAs ever, first the very good DDC Pénombre now this one (even better) calling itself a Stout although it could really pass as a Black IPA. This Black IPA trend is the best new trend to hit north-America in a very very long time. I’d say the best new trend since the mini-skirts.
Cask at Soirée des Grands Crus, Siboire (Sherbrooke). Appearance: Black with a small creamy brown/moka head and beautiful lacing. Aroma: Citrus, coffee, chocolate and hops. Taste: Citrus, roasted malt and hops. Palate is creamy. Slight bitterness. Overall: Well balanced and refreshing but could add more complexity. Pint at the brewpub. Opaque black pour with dense whitish head. Aroma of burnt toast, lots of piney hops (cascade would be my guess), licrorice and coffee. Taste is very bitter, quite harsh with coffee and bittering hops dominating throughout, some notes of herbs and roastiness. Palate is superb. Very well carbonated, not too heavily bodied with a long dry bitter finish. A very good beer, the only thing that could keep me from lining up successive pints of this is that the repeated assault on my tastebuds would probably leave me tasting nothing else for the rest of my life.

On tap at the brewery. Pitch black with a tan head. It has a soft roasty cocoa aroma & light citrusy hops - really black IPA aroma/taste. Well done.

bu sur place en fût, couleur noire opaque, nez frais et agréable, bouche bien torréfié, bonne amertume, j’ai bien aimé vipinvelp (4368) - Velp, NETHERLANDS - OCT 22, 2012
Black with brown thick foam head, sticking to lip and lacing to glass, just the way I like it. Aroma is bitter hops and chocolate. Taste is overwhelming bitter hops and yet chocolate and toffer present. Good long lasting bitter aftertaste. A good beer. (Montreal 201210)
